Day Two of the HARD Haunted Mansion continued with the tradition of showcasing several breakthrough acts which are not as frequent in America. Goose, performing in America for only the second time, got the Main stage warmed up as people began trickling in from an exhausting day prior. The Harder Stage included a ménage à trios of sorts as Jackmaster, who rarely makes his way to America, played a set heavy on funky and UK-garage tunes which seem to be more popular in Europe than here, judging by the disappointing turnout. The Magician, formerly of Aeroplane, played one of the most surprising sets of the weekend. There’s something about disco that seems to make even the most shy of dancers, attempt to recreate the choreography they saw in LMFAO’s “Party Rock Anthem” video. Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs, or T.E.E.D., seemed a surprising act to book, but quickly rounded out the threesome of stellar performances on the Harder stage with his live instrumentation and vocals.
Skrillex, the face of the exploding dubstep genre in America, played to what appeared to be the most packed crowd of the weekend. Still on his worldwide Mothership Tour, he was unfortunately forced to play without his one-of-a-kind LED and motion sensing stage, but that didn’t seem to matter. Beginning his set with his recent collaboration with The Doors—yes those Doors—Skrillex was met by a crowd who seemed to be letting loose some reserve energy they saved specifically for him. Splitting my time between Skrillex follow-up Major Lazer, and dubstep legend,12th Planet on the Harder Stage, proved to be troublesome. Cited by URB as being the “King of American Dubstep,” Los Angeles native, 12th Planet, played to a packed Exposition Hall and paid respect to the city he calls home, as several new and unreleased tracks were played to a crowd eager to replenish their dubstep fix after Skrillex.
Closing the Main Stage on Saturday was one of the most raw and influential dance acts of our time. Soulwax, the electo-infused rock band from Belgium, who have played in countless countries and remixed the likes of Daft Punk, Justice, and the Gorillaz, competed with Skream & Benga’s set at the Harder stage. Seemingly rare for dance music acts today, Soulwax used REAL instruments, to perform their closing set which included hits such as “E Talking” and “NY Excuse.”
With the exception of the TSA-style security coming into the event, HARD Haunted Mansion’s unique theme and setting, left thousands of fans pleased as they returned to their normal lives on Monday. It is not every day you can return to work and say you danced with a girl over the weekend who was dressed as a banana.
