Gallery Music Eye to Eye with Butch Walker

September 7, 2011 - 7:45 am

Butch Walker was supposed to be one of the headlining artists at this year’s Sunset Junction Music Fest but due to some pesky street fines and fine print on contracts, the festival was cancelled. That didn’t stop Butch and his army of Black Widows from performing, however. “We were all dressed up and nowhere to go when they canned it,” joked Butch. The guys made the best of it, with plan B being a 30-minute set in the courtyard of their new label, Dangerbird Records. The show consisted of the band performing the entire track list off of the latest and greatest Butch Walker and the Black Widows release, The Spade. A giant crowd packed into the outdoor courtyard and even Justin Kirk (Andy Botwin on Weeds) came out for the soiree.

Prior to the performance, Butch sat down with ChinaShop to discuss the new album, embarrassing tattoos, and his distaste for synthesizer music.

Music Phew… Tokyo Police Club Finishes 10 Covers Songs in 10 Days (From the past 10 Years), Vacation Ensues

September 6, 2011 - 4:22 am

Tokyo Police Club have just finished a marathon. Well, not literally. They did not run 26.2 miles but what they did do was successfully record 10 covers songs in 10 days (from the past 10 years). Quite a project if you can imagine the amount of work that goes into learning each song, re-creating it in your own manner, getting stuff to sound good, getting good takes, mixing, mastering… To put it plainly, these guys have just completed “the impossible.” If you ask me, TPC, the engineers at Red Bull Studios and everyone involved with the project deserves a vacation, or at least a couple days to basque in the glory of their achievement.

If you’ve been following along here on ChinaShop, you know that we’ve been with them each step of the journey, sharing the fruits of their labor with you each day at 10 am. And now that the ride is over and the journey complete, you can sit back, relax, and enjoy all 10 songs in one place, along with some ChinaShop exclusive pix of the boys in and around the studio working hard, and blowing off some much needed steam.

Music TPC Takeover: 09 – Harlem Shakes – “Strictly Game”

September 2, 2011 - 11:02 am

It’s the 4th Quarter and the 9th song in Tokyo Police Club’s “10 songs in 10 days from the last 10 years” project is Harlem Shakes “Strickly Game.” TPC’s rendition of the 2009 ditty lets the words really come to life. Listen closely for what is quite possibly one of the best lines of the 2000s, “Sick of dressin’ like a human when I’m feelin’ like a leopard.” Tally ho.

Gallery Music Hope and Ruin : The Trews

September 2, 2011 - 10:27 am

Sitting down with Canada’s indie rockers, The Trews, was far from a boring experience. They had great stories – on stage pranks involving other bands placing male porn on their amps, drinking Jim Beam with Kid Rock, filming a music video in freezing temperatures without a jacket…

The band arrived in Los Angeles earlier in the day and prior to their Viper Room set, embarked on a secret mission to capture a photo next to the Hollywood sign. This resulted in a major deviation from the path and a not-so-happy police helicopter flying overhead as a signal for them to scurry on their way.

After I accidentally butchered the name of their latest album’s title track (they did admit to liking my version better), we dove into important topics such as the difference between Americans and Canadians and joked about how being called “The greatest rock band of their generation” by Performer Magazine is annoying because it “forces them to be good every night.”

Film Fridays David Lynch’s Parisian Nightclub, Batman Porn, and A Tribute to Lightsabers (and Flock of Seagulls)

September 2, 2011 - 8:18 am

I guess all that’s missing is the celebrated cast of characters — The Log Lady, Agent Dale Cooper, Frank Booth — but the renowned director’s Parisian nightclub may be the next closest thing to hanging out in Lynch’s dreams, especially since it’s named and modeled after Club Silencio in Mulholland Drive. Warning: That’ll be 1000 francs, please. Read the full story

Gallery Music Deadmau5: Sorry For Partying

September 1, 2011 - 10:15 am

You have to be pretty popular in the electronic music world to sell out the 4,000-person capacity Hollywood Palladium – not once, but four nights in a row. Deadmau5 and his Meowingtons Hax Tour had no problem completing such a task. The tour, named after Joel Thomas Zimmerman of Deadmau5’s cat, Professor Meowingtons, kicked off at Lollapalooza in Chicago before arriving in Los Angeles on August 25 – 28.
