Geek Geeks and Sex and Kink! Oh, My!

September 14, 2011 - 8:26 am

Geeks Are SexyAs Margaret Cho asked in her special, Notorious CHO, “What’s this weird connection between fans of Star Trek, S&M, and the Renaissance Faire?”

She is certainly not the first to make the connection between geeks and kink, nor does that connection seem to be without merit. Indeed, it seems that the more into Klingon weaponry you are, the more likely it is that you attend the Folsom Street Fair every year. Like Wonder Woman comics? You may also a submissive man who enjoys bondage. The same people that go to San Diego Comic Con are often the same people that go to Shibaricon. But why? Are geeks kinkier than most people? Or are they just more honest about it?

Gallery Music Heavyweight Hip-Hop: Rick Ross

September 14, 2011 - 8:22 am

The “I Am Still Music” hip-hop tour drew impressive crowds as it made its way across the country for its 2011 run. The tour (headlined by Lil Wayne and featuring Keri Hilson, Far East Movement, Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross and more) ended its run on September 11th in Woodlands, TX. While Wayne took front and center, the rest of the performers, including Ross, held their own, contributing to the aura of the traveling festival.

If you’re unfamiliar with Ross, allow me to bring you up to speed. Ross is an artist who has dominated large parts of the hip-hop scene for years. Ross was one of the forerunners in revamping Miami’s rap scene and putting it back in the national spotlight. Predominantly influenced by Luther Campbell and the Notorious B.I.G., he began rapping in the 1990’s, fronting the group, Carol City Cartel. Their sound took its cue from Ross’ unique baritone voice; makes sense considering Ross is an imposing six feet at 300lbs.

Our journey to see AWOLNATION perform at Jimmy Kimmel began with standing in an alley to check in for credentials as a herd of paparazzi perked up. Fans began losing their minds while yelling out: “Elijah, Elijahhhhhhhh.” Elijah Wood passed by and the whole ordeal was repeated when Jennifer Morrison, Kimmel’s other guest star, strutted by. A man clad in a snazzy white suit wearing the AWOLNATION helmet walked around and snapped pictures with fans. The drummer from Fishbone was spotted stumbling around as the area in front of the outdoor stage began filling up. It was typical Hollywood chaos.

Music Don’t Argue, It’s The 10 Best Cover Songs of All Time

September 13, 2011 - 8:04 am

I have a love/hate relationship with most cover songs. Much like I have a love/hate relationship with gin, ice cream and the New York Mets. Very few of them are ever well executed, and some of them induce fits of rage: Dynamite Hack’s “Boyz In The Hood,” (criminal) Jason Mraz’s version of “I Melt With You” (really, dude?), and Korn’s “Another Brick In The Wall” (shoot me now). Others are just too good and/or easy to mention: Guns N Roses’ version of “Knockin’ On Heaven’s Door,” The Cowboy Junkies’ “Sweet Jane,” and Sonic Youth’s cover of “Superstar.” Then there are the ones on the list before you.

Oddity Modern Day Vampirism: Blood, Sex, and Prosthetic Fangs

September 12, 2011 - 7:43 am

Vampires: Mythological or folkloric beings who subsist by feeding on the life essence (generally in the form of blood) of living creatures, regardless of whether they are undead or a living person. – Wikipedia

1. A corpse supposed, in European folklore, to leave its grave at night to drink the blood of the living by biting their necks with long pointed canine teeth. 2. A person who preys ruthlessly on others. – Dictionary.com

A pale yet handsome 104-year old high school boy named Edward Cullen who goes against his better judgment, gives into urges, and falls in love with a mortal named Bella Swan. – Twilight movie series

Clearly, the word “vampire” means something different to everyone, but that’s part of what makes us so curious, isn’t it? Part of the allure of the whole vampire thing is the fact that these supposed creatures are so ambiguous to us. There are people out there that claim to be vampires but what exactly does that mean? Do they really suck people’s blood? Do they have sex in coffins? Do these modern day vampires hide from the daylight and are they immortal?

Michael Vampire, lead singer of Vampires Everywhere!, considers himself to be a modern vampire living in urban Los Angeles and has volunteered to help walk us through common stereotypes regarding the vampire lifestyle. Michael explains what is true and what is far from it and divulges what modern day vampirism is all about:

Gallery Music Welcome to Wonderland: Gram Rabbit

September 9, 2011 - 11:40 am

If you happened to pass through West Hollywood last weekend, you most likely caught sight of swarms of jolly individuals wearing bunny ears. No, Easter didn’t come early this year and there wasn’t any sort of obscure theme party going on, these folks were just bright-eyed and bushy-tailed fans of Gram Rabbit.

Hailing from the desert of Joshua Tree, Gram Rabbit produces a sound that is distinctly their own – a style they proudly refer to as “desert rock.” The four-piece, led by Jesika von Rabbit and Todd Rutherford, cite their experiences with living away from the city lights and the magic of residing in a barren wilderness as the inspiration for their quirky tunes.

The band recently performed at the Viper Room in Los Angles, running through a set list that included “Hyena,” “Wheels in Motion,” “I Rest My Case,” “Off With Your Head,” Falling Debris,” off their latest album Miracles & Metaphors. They also revved up fans with “Waiting in the Kountry,” “Cowboys & Aliens,” and “Bloody Bunnies.” Their live rendition of “Candy Flip,” included Greta Valenti from Well Hung Heart joining Jesika on stage.

Shortly after the a crowd of bunnies took over, we chatted with Gram Rabbit’s Jesika von Rabbit who told us about everything from her habit of jumping on stage with notorious rock stars to her army of followers who refer to themselves as “The Royal Order of the Rabbits.”
