Music When your G6 is down, What you Gon’ do? Hitchhike? FEM has a “Man Up Moment”
The Far East Movement could have used a G6 yesterday when their tour bus broke down in the middle of the New Mexico desert, leaving them to thumb a ride back to civilization (seriously, this just happened). A rep from the band told TMZ that “the guys were traveling from Missouri to Phoenix when their bus died … stranding them 50 miles away from the nearest taxi service … which refused to send a car that far.”
Music TPC Takeover: 03 – The Strokes – “Under Control”
Next up in the 3 slot is a little ditty by The Strokes called “Under Control.”
“2003 is The Strokes’ “Under Control” which is just the best understated Strokes song. I love that song. It’s so simple. The thing with that song is we thought it might be too straight up if we just played it as is. We got kind of a little bit of a I don’t know what you call it, it’s not reggae it’s like dubby – some sort of another groove going for it.” – David Monks of TPC
Film 3 Directors That Let Me Down, Part 1*
3. Darren Aronofsky– The Wolverine: Darren, I love you. That said, go f*ck yourself. As you’ve made clear, you’re too GOOD for the Wolverine franchise and have no wish to dirty your hands with a comic book movie and turn it into something Nolan-worthy. Want to spend more time with the family? What kind of director are you? (And is that why you’ve just had four films in pre-production, you lying bastard?) What went wrong? Is it the script? It’s a piece of sh*t, isn’t it?
Music TPC Takeover: 02 – Jimmy Eat World – “Sweetness”
Continuing right along with Tokyo Police Club’s ChinaShop Takeover where they bring you 10 covers from 10 years (of the 2000′s) over the course of 10 days (kind of a big undertaking considering the logistics), but hulled up in Red Bull Studios and steadfast on their mission, they will not be stopped or distracted… Day 2 of the challenge brings us TCP’s rendition of Jimmy Eat World’s “Sweetness” (2002) and all the #party that goes along with it. Enjoy and stay tuned for more surprises as the 10 covers /10 years in 10 days project continues.
Geek Boobs, Hackers, and Bears in Jet Packs: The Wonderful World of Nerdcore
One side-effect of this obsession with all things nerd is the pop culture phenomenon known as ‘nerdcore.‘ What the hell is nerdcore, you might ask? For the most part, it’s a bunch of honkies who often look like Milton from Office Space and rap about Nintendo, Star Trek, and computer hacking. Here’s more on the scene which spawned the Nerdcore Calendar, Nerdapalooza, and a few of the most dysfunctional/erratic/talented rappers in the genre.
Music Highlights and Hullabaloo from the Sunset Strip Music Festival
This past weekend, The Sunset Strip transformed into a world where Vince Neil belted out lyrics in between bursts of pyrotechnics all the while sporting an American flag on the crotch of his pants, Tommy Lee strapped himself to his drum kit and looped around a roller coaster, and Bush’s Gavin Rossdale leapt from the stage to get up close and personal with a sea of thousands. Thanks to The 4th Annual Sunset Strip Music Festival, the streets of West Hollywood may never be the same…
Music No plan B: Imagine Dragons
It turns out that not everything in the desert is dead, dying, or on its way there. (Shocker, I know.) Based out of the Vegas desert, up-and-coming band, Imagine Dragons, rehydrates the indie pop-rock genre with its synth-driven pop-rock sound.
Its members pulled from all over the states, Imagine Dragons’ lineup now includes Ben McKee (bass), Wayne Sermon (guitar), Theresa Flaminio (keys), Dan Reynolds (vocals), and Daniel Platzman (drums). Some of them have been classically trained (McKee dropped out of Berklee College of Music less than one semester shy of graduation), while others have honed skills on their own. In the end, each element (and member) offers something solid to their sound as a group. There is nothing lacking or overflowing.
ChinaShop was able to steal the band for a bit (no gags or rope required) before they went on to play another show during the Sunset Strip Music Festival.
Music Rodeo Clowns, Shotgun Weddings and Stories From the Sunset Strip: dredg
Some crazy conversation topics came up when chatting with dredg before their Sunset Strip Music Festival gig. We may have started off talking about the new album, humorously titled “Chuckles and Mr.Squeezy,” but when you get ChinaShop and a band in the same room together, the conversation always takes a twist. Band members Gavin Hayes and Mark Engles told tales of being strip searched at the Canadian border. We discussed how for some reason many guys in North America think it’s a good idea to propose to or marry their women on the stage at a dredg show. The band made us aware of the obscure talents of The Sunset Strip’s most attention-seeking ladies and explained how they don’t recommend picking a band name really quickly before a high school talent show because a decade and a half later you might still be stuck with it.
Gallery Music An Intimate Event: The Weepies at the Troubadour
The Weepies don’t play live often. They used to but then they had kids, they got busy, life happened. When they do play, however, you better buy your ticket early, especially if it’s an intimate acoustic show because they sell out fast!
The husband and wife duo of Steve Tannen and Deb Talan recently packed up the family and decided to take their show on the road. Before leaving town, they made several jokes on the band’s official Facebook page about being the masters of packing and visiting exotic destinations on tour.
“We fit a family of four into only 84 bags, a 65 foot bus, and a 14 foot trailer. Preparing for tour feels like leaving on a ship bound for distant lands, even though the most exotic place we’re going is Minneapolis.”
