Featured Music I Also Like To Rock: Milo Greene

August 3, 2011 - 11:35 am

There are some sounds that will forever resonate with us and vibrate beneath/against our thoughts. Up and coming indie band, Milo Greene, reshuffles sounds common to the genre, but in a way that makes their songs worthy of space on your repeat playlist. I recently saw them live at the Hammer Museum’s “I Also Like To Rock” event.

Their sound is reminiscent of Local Natives mixed with a more upbeat version of Joseph Arthur. One element that sets their sound apart is their use of two-, three- and four- part harmonies reminiscent of Fleet Foxes. It’s good music to write to, or to ponder pigeons and trees.

I was especially struck by the female vocalist’s voice. There is a depth to it, which allows her voice to solidly carry itself. In her own way, she reminded me of Florence Welch or Chan Marshall. Their song “1957” (included below for your listening pleasure) is definitely head-bob worthy in a drum-circle sort of way. Live, they are both low-key and animated, scrambling across the stage to switch instruments with one another after each song. That sort of band cohesion allowed each member’s sound to flow seamlessly into the rest without one weighing down any other.

Check them out at Sunset Junction, August 27. Give their songs a listen or pre-order the CD (out in mid-August) at the band’s website.
