Big Release week…something for everybody, really — biggest of all (arguably) are Arctic Monkeys, who have a new album Suck it and See; punks might dig the first self-titled solo work of Nick 13 from Tiger Army…or at the spectrum’s other end, the self-described ‘flower punk’ of Black Lips…or Bauhaus frontman Peter Murphy is back with Ninth, his first new album in nearly a decade…okay so nothing super-big, but summer’s still ahead…

Gallery Music Barcelona, Holcombe Waller And Jenny O Make Friends In LA

June 7, 2011 - 10:39 am

Since it opened up in 2000, Los Angeles’ Hotel Café has been a hotbed of singer/songwriter activity, routinely turning out quality shows for audiences of no more than 200 people. With a super intimate floor plan, great lighting and sound, and $9 glasses of Knob Creek, it’s one of my favorite venues in the city, and like Largo or Spaceland (R.I.P.), one of the few spots that curates consistently amazing lineups. Last Friday night the Making Friends Tour rolled in, featuring a trio of West Coast talent in Jenny O (LA), Holcombe Waller (SF) and Barcelona (Seattle). Since I got there early enough to cop one of the few candlelit tables—complete with waitress service—you know the Knob Creek was flowing.

Gallery Music Tuning Into The Radio Dept.

June 7, 2011 - 10:30 am

There seems to be no end in sight to the amount of rising stars coming from Sweden’s music scene. While you’ve most certainly heard of bands like
Peter Bjorn and John, Shout Out Louds, The Sounds, The Hives, Mike Snow, Kent, Robyn, etc., the country is also home to phenomenal music projects which have managed to stay more under the radar, such as the dream pop trio, The Radio Dept.

The indie pop sensation consisting of Johan Duncanson, Martin Larsson, and Daniel Tjäder, has been making music under the current line up since 2001 while performing show around the world and collecting an ever-growing line up of underground fans. Prior to their recent set at Los Angeles’s Troubadour, the guys sat down with ChinaShop to discuss avoiding the limelight, the lengthy recording process on album “Clinging To a Scheme,” as well as Johan’s goofy hobby of snapping pictures of the television screen.

Music 50 Cent Digs Deep In VH1 Documentary

June 6, 2011 - 11:22 am

50 Cent Documentary

Opting to not read the press release for the documentary 50 Cent: The Origin of Me before watching, it was a mystery whether the film was going to be yet another look into 50’s storied past in Jamaica, Queens or something entirely different. Thankfully this film, which is part of VH1’s “Rock Docs” series, leans heavily towards the latter category.

Film Fridays Clive Barker: Whatever Happened to The Scariest Man in Cinema?

June 3, 2011 - 5:41 pm

Clive Barker

In a cinema dominated by Saw remakes and plain un-scary haunted house films, consider this a personal plea to what was once cinema’s most promising force in horror — a man that now seems to have completely vanished from a genre he once seemed on the verge of re-inventing, and still in dire need of some innovation.

Quentin Tarantino once commented, “Nobody knows how to get under the skin like Clive Barker.” This was after Stephen King had proclaimed that he’d “witnessed the future of horror, and his name is Clive Barker,” something that remained the unofficial Barker movie tagline for many moons. So where in hell has cinema’s horror Jesus gone?

Featured Gallery Music Give Us Any Chance, We’ll Take it: Garfunkel and Oates

June 3, 2011 - 11:47 am

The comedy-folk duo of Riki Lindhome and Kate Micucci, otherwise known as Garfunkel and Oates, was brave enough to spend an afternoon at the mercy of ChinaShop. While Kate climbed on the floor and ate candy from a broken piñata, Riki feverishly attempted to blow bubbles with pieces of ghetto chewing gum before resorting to the dangerous sport of tossing hard candy into her mouth. Assembly lines collapsed and clown heads were sacrificed, but all was for the sake of an epic photo shoot.

Prior to sending the ladies into the factory and skipping down the road in vintage threads, Garfunkel and Oates sat down for an interview. The sidesplitting duo discussed their recent deal with HBO, shared secrets of performing for tough audiences, and explained how they can’t get through a writing session without bursting out into laughter.
