Film Access All Areas: Foo Fighters with Director James Moll

June 10, 2011 - 12:51 pm

JAMES MOLL - Director 2011

Foo Fighters: Back And Forth is released on DVD this week. If you’re a fan of music and a good story, then seeing Foo Fighters: Back And Forth is essential viewing. ChinaShopMag got to hang out with the film’s director James Moll on the Universal Lot where his office is tucked behind the legendary Phantom of The Opera soundstage (oh it’s legendary alright! And possibly haunted). Hearing him speak about the art of film, it’s clear that James Moll loves his job! Which is handy when you make movies for a living.

When he first started working on the lot, he told me he’d take his lunch up to the Psycho house on the hill and eat it sitting on the porch, watching the tourists roll by on the Studio Tram. It’s a lovely view from up there he tells me. Today on our impromptu walking tour of the Universal Studios lot, Moll is posing for photos in front of the CSI set on stage 24. A Tram rolls by, and they start snapping fervently perhaps mistaking the director for a star of the crime scene show. Moll is working on his EGOT, so far nailing a few Emmys and an Oscar. The former for Best Documentary Feature for The Last Days in 1999. EGOT stands for Emmy-Grammy-Oscar-Tony. Tracy Jordan has one on 30 Rock. If James Moll keeps it up, he’ll have his EGOT soon enough.

Gallery Music Shoot First (While Smiling): Flying Lotus

June 10, 2011 - 8:37 am

Within five minutes of Flying Lotus’ set on the Red Bull Music Academy stage at Movement on Memorial Day, it was obvious why he was closing down the stage for the weekend. Flying Lotus (born Steven Ellison) came in with a “shoot first, ask questions later” mentality. After rumors that he might be late (no one wanted to see his much anticipated set reduced), Ellison arrived like he had something to prove.

Art You Gotta Break Some Eggs… The Art of Scott Campbell

June 10, 2011 - 8:34 am

Scott Campbell

Last October, Scott Campbell, the Brooklyn-based tattoo artist-turned-fine artist, arrived in Mexico for the opening of his solo show to find a vodka company’s logo plastered all over the gallery; he had agreed to only a small logo.

“Essentially, I had some issues,” he told Interview, “and when I confronted [the show’s organizer] with these issues in what I felt was a productive way, he came back with a personal attack.”

Campbell said he tried to rectify the situation, but when he realized they were at an impasse, he decided, “No one makes any money.” He lit a gasoline-fueled fire outside of the gallery and proceeded to throw all of his work — which sold out on opening night — into it.

It was a defining moment in his nascent career. But it came and went faster than the gallery in Mexico could extinguish the flames (and then sell the pieces for top dollar as “artist-intervened” works).

Art People Are Strange (This Means You): Tim Burton Goes to LACMA

June 9, 2011 - 10:19 am

Tim Burton @ LACMA

Unlike so many modern art museums, with their half-assed, 1-painting-every-10-feet exhibit rooms, the minds behind LACMA’s new Tim Burton display have made it a fully immersive event. From the crooked walls which compliment his labyrinthine mind, to a giant monster mouth you must brave to get there — suburbanites and city-slickers alike are being plucked from their ordinary world and thrown into the strange. Consider it less a museum space than sanctuary inside Burton’s pleasantly twisted brain.

Mid-fi synth-wave, slow-motion funk. How could you read it and not want to hear it? But Com Truise does you one better — he offers up a visual accompaniment with just about everything he releases. To announce a trio of shows — first trip overseas to Sweden, his two-hour show at Movement 2011 and a set in Toronto — Com pumped out a slick graphic to let you know. He designed the artwork for his Ghostly International debut, “Galactic Melt,” due July 5. He rocks a t-shirt he designed to coincide with said release.

These, ladies and gentlemen, are the perks of being the digital art director for a global pharmaceutical firm and a budding New Jersey-based DJ whiz.

Gallery Music Skrillex: Electro Rock N Roll

June 7, 2011 - 4:38 pm

I first heard of Sonny Moore (better known as Skrillex) back when he was in a little punk rock band called From First to Last on Epitaph Records. His electro house/ dubstep inspired sound doesn’t feel very rock n roll at first blush, however his ability to mix sounds, create moods, and subvert the expected is very punk rock, even in the electro community.
