Art Artist Dalek: Pushing Boundaries

June 27, 2011 - 10:29 am

Dalek UAB process 1

For his new exhibition at the University of Alabama, the artist Dalek (born James Marshall) works with only the color blue, manipulating various shades in a precise geometry to create dimension. The new work is a departure from what he is known for — painting with a bright and varied palette, most recently in abstract patterns that were simultaneously chaotic and ordered.

“That show was a definite departure, but it was fun to play with an entirely new direction,” he said of the exhibition in Alabama. “I think these sorts of things feel like a natural transition for me, or an expansion really. I don’t think it replaces anything, just sort of adds to the foundation.”

Soon, Dalek heads off to Oklahoma City to undertake another installation and, no doubt, reveal more surprises. Recently, I spoke with him to find out more about the new show and his no-fear attitude.

Marcia and Lorenzo: Don't f*ck with granddaddy

The real reason you read film critics are to vehemently disagree and/or feel vindicated that you KNEW Green Lantern/the new J.Lo vehicle/yet another Kate Hudson movie was going to suck. It also clarifies the reason I don’t do many reviews, if only because a) I haven’t got enough dough to get out and see a new release (lemme know if you wanna donate cashmoneymillions to me) and b) these guys may be the best thing to happen to movie criticism since some generous soul posted outtakes of Siskel and Ebert on the web, fighting over McDonalds. Speaking of which:

Bars/Clubs Gallery Saturday Night S&M at Club Suicide

June 24, 2011 - 10:54 am

A man walking his date around on a leash, scantly clad go-go dancers, and a fetish playroom parlour were just a few of the highlights of Saturday’s Club Suicide. For those who are kicking themselves for missing out, the tatted up eye candy known as the SuicideGirls host these sexy evenings on the third Saturday of every month.

These sinful nights have been a common occurrence over the years and have taken place at a variety of venues. The past few have been held at the Monte Cristo – a recently remodeled artsy club in downtown Los Angeles outfitted with vaulted ceilings, a disco ball lit dance floor, framed mirrors on the ceiling, and an expansive rooftop patio that provides a panoramic city view.

Gallery Music The Strokes Leave Them Numb

June 24, 2011 - 9:47 am

When The Strokes formed in 1998 they were a bunch of privileged New York kids with famous friends. Their sound was irreverent and admittedly unpolished and both critics and fans alike couldn’t get enough.

The casual vocal stylings of lead singer Julian Casablancas soon incited a movement. Considered creators of some of the best pop songs ever recorded, I have to admit I originally wanted to hate them. I first learned of The Strokes and their ilk by watching bad reality TV. After hearing their massive pop smash, “Last Night” I secretly purchased This Is It and begrudgingly listened to it…again…and again.

Gallery Music #justsayin: Northside Fest Day 4

June 23, 2011 - 2:39 pm

It was Sunday afternoon and I set out to enjoy the last of the Northside Festival riches. Four days of music and art were drawing to a close and I was content with the events of the weekend. I fought my way through crowds, rubbed shoulders with indie music celebs, I saw more shows in four days than I have since SXSW and I’ve got a list of EP’s to download.
