Gallery Music Red Bull Live Sessions: Ozomatli Raise La Temperatura

May 18, 2011 - 11:25 am

Since its debut back on March 26—featuring a memorable performance by Grammy winner Raphael SaadiqRed Bull Live Sessions have provided some of music’s most talented artists with an intimate setting in which to perform and discuss some of their favorite songs. But all the interview prep, camera blocking and breakfast burritos were no match for the motley LA crew known as Ozomatli, who, with a little help from host Gabriel Iglesias (a.k.a. Fluffy) threw a proper Cuatro de Mayo party down at Red Bull Studios in Los Angeles.

Jason “Stuntkid” Levesque is one of the most staggeringly accomplished digital artists I’ve met.  He’s done his pastel pretty, aesthetically subversive designs for clients like Nike, Tori Amos and Marvel Comics.  Here we talk about pixels, muses, and the beauty of disgust.

Art Gallery Cinco De Mayo Luchadores Style

No Cinco de Mayo party would be complete without music, tacos, and an arsenal of Mexican wrestlers, that’s why I chose to celebrate mine at Nomad Collective Art Compound. The Los Angeles-based studio known for hosting a variety of diverse events rented a regulation size wresting ring and rallied the most authentic taco chefs they could find for an event they called “Lucha Lounge.”

Comic Books Geek In a ChinaShop: Tony Trov and Johnny Zito Prove That Philly is a Comics Force to be Reckoned With!

May 17, 2011 - 10:28 am

Moon Girl Cover

Tony Trov and Johnny Zito have been garnering attention for their collaborative efforts in comics since their Harvey Award-nominated webcomic Black Cherry Bombshells, which was first published by DC under their Zuda Comics imprint back in 2008 and won Zuda’s competition that year for Best Comic. Now, with Bombshells, The LaMorte Sisters, D.O.G.S of Mars (which is being developed into a film by High Treason Pictures), and the recently-released Moon Girl (Red 5 Comics) out in the world, their company, South Fellini seems to be setting the stage for global domination.

I had the chance to speak with Philadelphia natives Trov and Zito about their plethora of projects, why they are so drawn to female protagonists, and how sometimes, starting a company is entirely dependent on finding the merchandise first.

Music THRICE – Required Listening

May 16, 2011 - 11:21 am

THRICE in Red Bull Studios

Entering the lounge at the Red Bull Studios, the scene is similar to an intense study hall. The air is hushed. Backpacks and piles of books and papers along with a half dozen guitars fill the couches and table tops. Sitting alone, with a guitar is in his lap and alternately scribbling over a pad of paper and laptop is Thrice singer Dustin Kensrue. He’s pressed for time to finish lyrics to the band’s as-yet-untitled new album set for a Fall 2011 release that the band is currently in the middle of recording at the state-of-the-art Red Bull Studios. At the helm is producer/engineer Dave Schiffman (Bayside, The Bronx, Avenged Sevenfold). The band are excited about the new album and getting back on the road.

This well respected quartet formed 13 years ago in 1998. On the dawn of a new era, this self-proclaimed “band of introverted artists” sat down with ChinaShopMag to spill the beans on the record, and what they plan to do on their summer vacation.

Film Fridays Die Monster Die: ‘Habit’ Is the Greatest Vampire Film You’ve Never Seen

May 13, 2011 - 6:50 pm

Habit

This year’s remake of Fright Night begs the question. Have you had it with the f*cking vampire films? It didn’t used to be this bad. Once in while we would see a novelty vampire movie that was awesome, sometimes big-budget messes that were so fun to watch you didn’t care how pretentious they seemed (Interview with the Vampire and Coppola’s Dracula being two of the best examples). Habit was one of the former, an indie vampire flick that came out in the late 1990’s, and which still has yet to be usurped as reigning king of the genre. Its brilliance is in its simplistic approach, without coming across as simple.
