comedy Workaholics: Not so much

April 5, 2011 - 12:09 pm

Workaholics 2011

“When the guys have to pass a drug test at work, they only have one choice… Bribe middle school kids for clean urine.” Now if this description of an upcoming episode for Comedy Central’s new sorta scripted comedy series “Workaholics” does not pique your interest – Well then Grandma, take yo ass back to bed.

Because there is that special time in one’s life between getting that fancy paper that certifies you educated and actually getting a “real” job. A time filled with beer bongs, bong-bongs, and general debauchery which until this masterwork by Blake Anderson, Adam Devine, Anders Holm, and Kyle Newacheck of the web comedy troupe Mail Order Comedy, had yet to be chronicled properly in the annuls of time.

I was lucky enough recently to be kidnapped, stuffed in the trunk of a Volkswagen Beetle, and driven to the undisclosed party house in the San Fernando Valley where these guys actually live, shoot, and basically just ARE this show. The following was not written under duress… but maybe something else.

Featured Gallery Music The Sounds: Dying for Something

April 5, 2011 - 11:10 am

At long last, international superstars The Sounds have a new album! Something To Die For was released on March 29 on SideOneDummy Records.

The Sounds made a splash at SXSW 2011, with a stellar performance at The PureVolume House, as pictured here. The Sounds’ live show is not to be missed. Often described as a New Wave, electro dance party, the band’s energy is rivaled by few. And it’s rare to see a sight such as singer Maja Ivarsson land a jumping split kick in 3 inch heels. Even Pete Townsend and David Lee Roth wear a low heel or flat shoe.

And on the eve of their album release, The Sounds signed autographs for over 1000 fans who showed up at the Hard Rock Cafe in Hollywood for the album release party.

ChinaShopMag chatted with singer Maja Ivarsson while she was at the SideOneDummy headquarters in Hollywood on the heels of the band’s sold out show at the Avalon and completion of their Red Bull Studio session.

Gallery Music Chicks Dig ‘Em: Uh Huh Her

April 4, 2011 - 12:30 pm

At first listen it doesn’t look or sound like Uh Huh Her is doing much new. Like countless others, they’re riding the 1982-87 New Wave for all it’s worth, packing their stage full of vintage synths, programmed drums, and guitars drenched in delay. Watching their spirited performance at the El Rey on Friday night, it was still hard not to think of Gozer from Ghostbusters and those slicked-down backup dancers from that Robert Palmer video.

But unlike so many others, UHH gets it right, capturing the post-punk spirit of what made bands like Joy Division and The Creatures so catchy. Songs like “I See Red” are infectious and ethereal, even dreamy; “Never the Same” (a preview from their upcoming album Nocturnes), is awash in an astral noise that’s somewhere on the spectrum between Enya and top 40 pop.

And judging by the rapturous applause, they stole hundreds of girls’ hearts tonight. As for the boys, who cares.

Gallery Music MOBY Serves Up Vegan BBQ and Subwoofer Messages

April 4, 2011 - 10:38 am

Cheer Up Charlie’s is a interesting little dive bar on the east side of the stitches of 6th street in Austin, TX. Not the kinda place you expect 800+ people to show up for vegan BBQ but it was SXSW. Oh, and MOBY was on hand to pass out free subwoofer massages.

Luckily, the shirt soaked masses had been in good company through out the day by some great “instrument playing” acts that included the likes of electro-space band “French Horn Rebellion” and Canadian DIY’ers “Teen Daze”, and never would the turntable be let cooled thanks to the fidget-dubstep sounds of “Skrillex” and a not so gentle “Database”.

Gallery Music Bachaco Create Their Own Brand of Hot Sauce

April 4, 2011 - 10:32 am

Bachaco’s uniqueness only begins with its namesake, a Leafcutter Ant in Venezuela, which are used by native Venezuelan Indians to create a “picante” sauce. As just like those native tribes, Bachaco, blends Dancehall, Reggae, and Cumbia with a dash of Ska and Hip-Hop to create their own type of spicy global music.

Film Fridays What You Should See This Weekend (A Movie About a Killer Tire) and What You Should Avoid (Everything Else)

April 1, 2011 - 6:20 pm

Rubber (Balls and Liqour)

Even though it’s April, consider the summer film season officially on. After last week’s almost universally panned Sucker Punch, the industry seems on the rebound with a slew of some of the year’s best-reviewed films.

But the one we’re recommending is Rubber, the tale of a living, presumably breathing and extremely pissed car tire named Robert – who wants nothing more than to hook up with chicks, watch exercise videos, and make heads explode, Scanners-style.

Featured Gallery Music Eliza Doolittle: These Boots Are Made For Walking

April 1, 2011 - 12:28 pm

In her short shorts and frayed top, 22-year-old Eliza Doolittle is easy to spot against the rows and rows of vintage leather that line the walls of Texas Custom Boots. The dusty, fragrant South Austin shop and its grizzled cobblers stand in stark contrast to the singer’s youthful, cherubic glint, but there’s something about the hodgepodge of western wear that jibes with Eliza’s colorful, eclectic style. She’s a Brit, hunkered down for the next few days in the most un-British of locales. She’s a vegetarian, surrounded by award-winning chefs who specialize of all manner of barbecued animal flesh. She is, for all intents and purposes, a pop star, and though she doesn’t have the sort of wear on her treads that these boots do, she’s poised for the long journey that lies ahead.

Last year, her self-titled debut reached #3 on the Billboard UK charts, and has since been certified platinum. She’s landed a Top 10 in three countries for her single, “Pack Up,” and earlier this year signed to a contract with the prestigious Select Models. She’s also performing at this year’s Coachella festival, a true rite of passage for those looking to make a significant splash in American waters. But before she hits the California deserts, best to pick up some shoes to match the occasion.

Music Mandy’s Music Mail 4/1/11

nkotbsb

NKOTBSB?! Mind. Blown. So NKOTB were a bit before my time, well I mean I knew girls who were obsessed with them, but at the time I was more of a Green Day girl (Dookie was one of my first albums, totes had the poster hanging up over my bed and everything; man I was a cool 8 year old…), however I was all about BSB (“I Want It That Way”, “Quit Playing Games With My Heart”?! Oh I could die. Such tunes!) so part of me is totally excited about this collaboration of ex-boyband heartthrobs. And their first single is undeniably catchy. This insanity drops May 24th.
