If you dial up your Home Video albums on iTunes, you’re bound to run across a track or two that touches on light sociopolitical discourse. But when singer/guitarist Collin Ruffino became engrossed in the ongoing WikiLeaks drama, he decided a track or two wasn’t enough, and that Home Video wasn’t necessarily the best avenue to deliver the particular message he wanted to communicate in support of the heavily criticized news source. Thus, NiveHive was born. (Download “The Stuffed Men Bristle” after the jump.) We got in touch with Ruffino to pick his brain about why the WikiLeaks drama is something everyone should be paying close attention to, and how he’s helping bolster their message in his own unique way: “WikiLeaks is not an organization, it is a backlash, a mutiny. NiveHive is here to provide the soundtrack.”

Art/Design “Language” at LA Art Lab
I’ve never attended an art show and walked out with homework but this was the case at LA Art Lab’s “Language”. After perusing Typeface (Barbara Kosoff), a piece that puts a spin on the language of typography, I meandered over to a piece titled Field Trip (Jill Vacarra). The caption instructed me to pick up an assignment and take it home with me. I couldn’t commit to just one and therefore grabbed three:

Film Fridays 5 Music Video Directors We’d Like to See Make a Jump to the Big Screen
(warning: pseudo-naughty bits ahead)
Rad Omen — “Rad Anthem” (Nicholas Goossen): Get together 5 fast-food restaurant mascots for a party on Friday night — in this case, Ronald McDonald, The Colonel, Jack from Jack in the Box, and the Burger King himself — all doing shots, doing lines, partaking in general debauchery, etc., and it”s hard not to get hooked. Arguably the lowest on the mascot totem pole, the miserable King doesn’t look like any amount of coke will help him.

Music Mandy’s Music Mail 3/4/11
Well it’s a gorgeous, sunny day in lovely London and I’m a bit horse from an epic karaoke session last night with some of my favorites; we sang everything from “Regulate” by Warren G and Nate Dogg, Pulp’s “Common People”, to “A Whole New World” from Aladdin (oh, yes). Was never a real big karaoke girl until I started dating the boy; 2 ½ years later and I’ve officially caught the bug. Round two tonight (thanks to an at-home set! Wooo!), but before that, let’s get to this week’s music news!
Broken Bells, the magical collaboration of Danger Mouse and James Mercer, are releasing a new EP, Meyrin Fields, slated for a March 29th release which will feature three unreleased songs as well as “An Easy Life” (off the iTunes bonus edition of their debut album). Check the track list after the jump.
Art/Design Gallery Oceanic Awareness Collaboration’s “Art For Awareness” Auction
Every piece of plastic that has ever been stamped, “Made in China”, or by any other country for that matter, still exists. Yes, some small portion has been burnt, but that just released toxic gas to the atmosphere. The rest sits in land fills, in your neighborhood park, or swims with the fishes in one of many swirling pools of plastic debris the size of Texas in our oceans. Tonight, two So-Cal boys named Tanner Hoss and Clay Wendel are out to change that.
Their “Oceanic Awareness Collaboration” has brought together 70+ artists from around the world, including my lovely boss lady Barbie Brady and this photographer’s favorite “photo stylist”/artist Renee Lawter, for an art show and silent auction this past weekend in Pamona, CA. I had a chance to chat up the founders for a quick minute over the roar of the show and the following is what they had to say…

Little Bar is a neighborhood bar with a great vibe, friendly atmosphere, and distinctive décor. Housed in a 1930’s building rumored to be a former Japanese speakeasy, Little Bar comes with a lot of character. The true gem of this friendly tavern, however, is its intricate interior. Every glance around the bar places you in touch with eclectic details that cause you to pine for the secret to its interior design success.

Featured Music Talkin’ Shop With The Paper Tongues
The Paper Tongues gave the music world a run for its money with the 2010 release of their debut album. Mixing elements of rock, funk, rap, and soul, their self-titled masterpiece does their eclectic range justice. It has something for everyone – the dance floor enthusiasts to the hip hop infused electronica fan and the typical rock junkie. Each one of the band’s seven members brings a unique style to the table, which blends seamlessly to form their unique sound. With the guidance of Randy Jackson, the Paper Tongues have transformed from street musicians to a touring force to be reckoned with.
Lead singer Aswan North gave me a call from the road to chat about the band’s rigorous tour schedule, plan for 2011, and to share some ‘uncomfortable’ moments from the bus. All I can say is thank goodness I had already eaten lunch way before our conversation.
