If you managed to stay on your feet through the entirety of South By Southwest, the intersection of 4th and Colorado is where you wanted to be on Saturday night. Though the gates didn’t officially open until 8pm, the line for the Red Bull Thre3Style had already stretched around two corners by 6pm. Weary ears desperate for a break from all the week’s rock ‘n’ roll madness were in for a serious treat as DJ-R, DJ M-Squared, Mick Boogie, DJ Qbert, DJ Jazzy Jeff, De La Soul and Z-Trip—with the help of a “supermoon” in the sky and a secret special guest in the wings—were set to move the crowd.

Music Apex Manor: Drinking And Thriving
I remember the day I got this promo in the mail. The Merge Records stamp on the press release piqued my interest, but it was the album title that moved it to the top of my listening stack for the afternoon: The Year Of Magical Drinking. I was vaguely familiar with the piece of literature on which the title was modeled after, but the music stood in complete juxtaposition with the book’s maudlin themes. This was a rock and roll record to be played loud with the top down, preferably while going a cool 60mph up the 2 Freeway from Echo Park to La Cañada. Download “Under The Gun” for free here, then give it a spin. You’ll see what I mean.
Featured Gallery Music Pretty Little Tings
If you are not yet aware The Ting Tings are Jules de Martino and Katie White. As self confessed fans of American iconic bands such as Talking Heads and Velvet Underground, the British Art Punk Pop duo briefly visited the West Coast for their Red Bull Soundclash vs Cee Lo Green in Las Vegas last week.
ChinaShop was able to grab a few precious minutes with the band to shoot some exclusive photos before their stunning performance in front of 6,000 plus expectant fans. So where else do you put an Art Punk duo from Britain, who have been recording in Berlin and are mixing the new album in Spain? Why in front of a giant black pyramid with lights shooting out of the top of course…
Geek Geek in a ChinaShop: Jessica Mills Holds Us In An Awkward Embrace
If you haven’t been watching Awkward Embraces, you’ve been missing out on one of the best shows to come along in any medium. Yeah, you heard me. It’s that good, and that funny. Awkward Embraces tells the story of three friends – Jessica, Candis, and Lyndsey – and their dating misadventures. It’s a simple concept, but what makes the webseries special is not only the incredible chemistry between the three leads and the sharp writing, but the fact that the lead character is an honest representation of a geek girl.
Awkward, but charming; naive about relationships, but willing to learn; beautiful with a real body, not the anorexic “beauty” too often favored in Hollywood; Jessica is a joy to watch because she feels like a real person. She also feels like a real female geek, dropping Star Trek references as easily as she breathes; feeling the desperate need to explain why her Star Wars t-shirt is funny even when it’s clear the person she’s speaking to won’t get it, or care. When I saw the episode where Jessica loses herself in talking about “Darmok,” her favorite Star Trek: The Next Generation episode, I squealed loudly thinking, “That’s my favorite episode, too!!” What every woman I’ve introduced to Awkward Embraces, geek or not, has said to me after watching is “Oh my God! This sounds like me and my friends!”
Music YG: Def Jam’s West Coast Rapping Prodigy
It had been 15 years since the infamous Def Jam Records had approached a West Coast rapper with a recording contract. That was the case until they stumbled upon YG. At just 19 years of age, YG signed with the prestigious label and began feverishly writing and recording. With the help of hit single “Toot it and Boot it,” YG found himself on a surreal track to stardom. He is currently working on a new album and is set to drop a mixtape in a few weeks.
The recent 21-year old is having the time of his life: a growing fan base, countless birthday celebrations, radio airplay, and a blossoming career. While in the studio to put the finishing touches on his mixtape, YG sat down with ChinaShop to explain how he landed his deal with Def Jam and how he’s celebrating his newly found success.
Featured Film Foo Fighters Back and Forth Premiere at SXSW
People can’t seem to stop talking about the Foo Fighters right now. Having been around for over 15 years, they still remain as relevant as ever. On Tuesday night at the closing of the SXSW Film Festival and Interactive activities in Austin the band premiered their latest endeavor, a documentary film called Foo Fighters Back and Forth.
After hearing about this project for the past 6 months I had some expectations. I knew the band was recording in Dave Grohl’s garage in his home on tape, with legendary producer Butch Vig at the helm. I knew that cameras where there for something like 3 months capturing the process. I also knew that they shot at least 5 hours of footage at the bands secret show at the Roxy Theatre last month. So my anticipation was that this film would focus on the latest and greatest antics and the making of a fresh but yet nostalgic process of writing a record.
Gallery Music Uh Huh Her: Night Moves
The last time I interviewed Leisha Hailey and Camila Grey of Uh Huh Her, they had just wrapped production on their new album. They had no label attachments, and had barely found a way to get it mixed, but their excitement was infectious. It only took one listen to hear why. Noctures is pure, blissful, dark pop. The lyrics seethe with delicious angst, and the beats and melodies scratch and spark against each other like gears in a machine shop. It’s only the band’s second album—their first, Common Reaction, came out in 2008—but it shows an incredible amount of both lyrical and instrumental growth.
Now we’re both in Austin, a few months removed from our initial conversation. They don’t yet have a label on which to release their album—slowly becoming the best album of 2011 you haven’t heard—but that doesn’t seem to be stopping their forward progress. Before our interview, their publicist hands me Black & Blue, a six-song EP of new material that they’ve just written, and it sounds really, really good. Naturally I had to ask ‘em about it. Naturally they had a lot to say.
PS: This is not our bike.
Music Walking Degeneration Street with The Dears
So if you’re not from Canada, you probably haven’t heard of this band. However, if you are from Canada, The Dears are probably your favorite indie rock outfit on the face of this earth. They’ve put out a solid five albums since 2000 and their newest, Degeneration Street, dropped early 2011.
Their Wednesday night show was held in my least favorite Austin nightclub, normally reserved for the just-turned-twenty-one/kamikaze-shot-taking/street-brawl-starting crowd, but as soon as The Dears took the stage I forgot all about the petrified puke smell and was transported to a place where funk, rock, pop and electronic sounds live happily in a big music commune in the sky. We’ll call it funrock-electro-op heaven, for short.
Gallery Music GroupLove: One For All, All For One
It’s the hottest day of the week so far in Austin, and Grouplove’s Ryan Rabin is standing in the street changing out of his gig clothes. Seems a fan of the band graced them with handmade Grouplove shirts before their set, and Rabin and his mates were gracious enough to wear them onstage. But since we’ve got photos to take and the shirts have been sufficiently sweated through, it’s time for a wardrobe switch. It’s also worth mentioning that Rabin is wearing a pair of black underwear and no pants. This is a part of his outfit that doesn’t change, but like I said, it’s hot out here.
