Gallery Music A Date With Fate ‘N Tapes ‘N Tapes

March 28, 2011 - 7:05 am

“Occasionally” I find my self passing a random bar and “occasionally” I’ll poke my head inside to see who might be stirring things up. My most recent encounter with random took place in loverly Austin, Tx with some gents who carry the moniker “Tapes n’ Tapes“.

This day found the Sun double parked upon the roof of a garage a couple blocks down on Red River St.

Film Fridays Why Video Games Make Sh*tty Movies…and Why the End is In Sight

March 25, 2011 - 5:56 pm

Sucker what

to make up for what you’re about to see.

As a sort of tribute to Sucker-Punch — which is a lot like a video game in that it’s very pretty to look at, lots of stuff gets blowed up good, and you have to defeat lots of big bosses and collect a sort of triforce of power thing (which in this case will allow you to escape rapists, sadistic dominatrixes and a Cuckoo’s Nest-style mental ward) — this week seems appropriate enough to pay a tribute to an age-old Hollywood disease that began, innocently enough, with this:

Picture 20

Take a stroll through cinema hell and view some of the worst video game to film translations ever, and find hope in why the genre might be dying out.

Does a Body Good

But first focus on this. Ok, here we go

Event Invent The Future: Red Bull Creation

March 25, 2011 - 4:04 pm

Red Bull Creation 2011

Start sparkin’ together those jumper wires, fire up the LED’s, make sure the power tools are on their chargers. From July 7 – 10, 2011, a soon-to-be-disclosed location in NYC will be turned into the ultimate hackerspace and serve as the laboratory for Red Bull Creation. For 72 hours, you’ll be thrown smack into the middle of a marathon of high stakes innovation. New York will become your playground as you roam the streets of the city and the alleys of your imagination, tapping into parts of the brain you’ve never heard of (or strike that, you’re the inventor here, you probably know way more about that than we do.)

sade

Apologies to all you gorgeous party people, I’m afraid this week’s post is going to be a bit on the short side; was one of those highly infuriating weeks where there just wasn’t that much to write about and very few new tracks that I actually enjoyed. Although Sade (who doesn’t love a little Sade action?) announced the release of a second greatest hits album (no released date yet) and she finally agreed to collaborate with my future BFF Jay Z on a track for it. So that’s rather magical.

Music The Majestic Mister Heavenly

March 25, 2011 - 8:13 am

Lets define the term “Supergroup”. Webster defines it very narrowly as “A rock group made up of prominent former members of other rock groups; also an extremely successful rock group.”

This definition would cover three of Mister Heavenly’s four members – Honus Honus of Man Man on keys and vocals, Nicholas Thorburn of Unicorns and Islands on vocals and guitar while Modest Mouse drummer Joe Plummer keeps time.

But how to place our fourth member? Did anyone even know he could play instruments? I guess he sang a little in Juno… Yes, thats right. Actor Michael Cera has picked up a bass and is touring with some of the most talented musicians alive.

Gallery Music Entering Planet Blaqstarr

March 24, 2011 - 2:46 pm

“I don’t play songs… I’m making experiences,” are the words Baltimore native Blaqstarr beams into my ear over the groans of the speaker cones currently being punished by his beats. An arguable reply to my request for the names of some seemingly space based high-energy dance tunes he expects to play this evening. But, judging from the fact that I am standing in a DJ booth adorned with giant replica Mammoth tusks and an emerald ‘laser harp’ some 20 feet above a sea of leg throwing hipsters losing their minds, he might be on to something.

Gallery Music Astronautalis at Metropolis (say that 5 times fast)

March 24, 2011 - 9:48 am

Andy Bothwell, known to many as the MC ‘Astronautalis’, played a whole bunch of shows during SXSW 2011, and I was lucky enough to make it to the very last one. The show was held pool side at Metropolis Apartments. If you went to school or live in Austin, you’ve no doubt visited or at least seen the tacky, brightly painted complex– lets just say it’s probably not any musicians first choice venue.
