Art/Design Joe Fig Takes You Inside The Painter’s Studio

March 31, 2011 - 10:50 am

In an effort to fully relate to and understand the creative process of some of his idol-worthy colleagues, Joe Fig set out to produce mini studio replicas of his favorite artists. Fig began intricately studying the studios of his muses, down to the finest detail. He conducted interviews, took photographs, and collected research, which he used as a blueprint for his studio replicas.

Fig’s research led him to publish his comprehensive findings in a book titled, “Inside The Painter’s Studio.” The book takes the reader inside the mind of 24 of Fig’s idolized artists and walks you through a day in the life of their artistic process.

Fig gave ChinaShop a behind-the-scenes peak inside the project and shared his techniques for completing such an intriguing task.

Gallery Music NOFX as told by Christine “Cece” Sherman

March 31, 2011 - 10:49 am

Long Beach resident Christine “Cece” Sherman has taken on a daunting task: to learn every song ever written by Californian punk rock legends NOFX and re-interpret them as folk songs on the acoustic guitar. NOFX’s lyrical depth and poignant satire take on a whole new life when stripped down to their basics. Grown men have been known to shed a tear when hearing the songs executed so delicately.

There’s Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Woody and Arlo Guthries, and now… Cece Sherman? Stranger things have happened.

Since debuting last fall, Cece, as she is called by friends, has already opened for such acts as Chuck Ragan, The Aggrolites, Exene Cervenka and The White Buffalo. And she made her first official tour to Austin to play alongside bands Cheap Girls, Continental, Joey Briggs, The Sparring and Death Punch at the Slidebar/Old Shoe Records/Iron Fist Clothing day party during SXSW 2011.

Between sets, Cece busked along 6th Street and that’s where we made this video of Eat The Meek.

CHROMA, An annual event at SXSW Interactive is unlike anything I’ve been to before. The show is hosted at Austin’s famous triple level bar Mohawk and is a collaboration of ConceptArt.Org, The Art Department, and Art Seen Alliance along with close to 100 volunteers, performers, and artists.

Art/Design Gallery In Your Face Decadence At Pop Tart Gallery

March 29, 2011 - 9:28 am

Wedged in between two subdivisions and a huge church in the middle of Koreatown, Phyllis Navidad’s Pop Tart Gallery is perhaps the last thing you’d expect to find in any suburb, really. A collage of transvestite/transsexual/glammed-out portraits that would make Ratt and Poison look like a bunch of Steve McQueens, tonight’s Your Face Here, curated by Lenora Claire, featured work by celebrated photographer of all things glam-n-drag Austin Young: Huge pictures of Margaret Cho, Perez Hilton and other gender-defying celebs adorn the white walls of this tiny gallery with a great big heart — while a chick/dude in a Dangerous-era Michael Jackson outfit spins mutant strains of classic disco mixed with modern R&B. All as you grab free cocktails. Then Kilsonic, a 50-piece ensemble brass band emerges, just in case you weren’t paying attention.

Gallery Music DJ Manny’s Mobile Demolition Machine

March 29, 2011 - 9:21 am

I’m not much of a cyclist. Meaning, I don’t ever ride a bike. Much less pilot a 4,000 lb monster tricycle with a DJ platform mounted chariot style on the rear deck. Oh, there’s also a DJ back there, but thankfully this MC is more lil’ Wayne than Big Poppa. He’s DJ Manny and he carries himself like a Shaolin with a Pueto Rican accent and a penchant for the f word.

Gallery Music A Man And His Mojo

March 28, 2011 - 7:09 am

It’s not every day you get to watch a mad scientist perform on stage, so when Moldover steps in for a set, be ready. At first view he is very unassuming because he packs only an electric guitar and a toaster oven sized box covered in buttons, switches, and dials. But don’t let this graduate from Berklee College of Music catch you off guard. He plugs in, says hello politely into the microphone, and then begins to make otherworldly sounds emanate from his guitar which can only be described as Eddie Van Halen shooting dance music lasers into space.
