Music Kanye West’s Top 10 Producing Credits

January 4, 2011 - 11:36 am

Kanye West

Before he was throwing temper tantrums at the MTV VMAs and being labeled the biggest jerk in the history of hip hop, and before he released his critically acclaimed My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, Kanye West was producing some of the dopest beats the game has ever heard.

Kanye’s career as a rap artist didn’t exactly take off like a Gulfstream en route to the south of France. Prior to reaching superstar status as a rap artist, many labels were reluctant to sign Kanye West “the producer” to a record deal.

It took a 2003 car accident to inspire Kanye to write and produce “Through the Wire”, a track he recorded with his jaw wired shut. With critical acclaim, his career as a respected rap artist and eventual superstar was launched. For Mr. West, there was no looking back.

Luckily for you, we enjoyed history class in high school. So much so that we decided to take a look back and list our favorite pre-superstar Kanye-produced tracks:

Gorillaz The Fall

Welcome back party people! and welcome to 2011! I’d like to kick off the new year with some freebies, some semi-freebies, and some new music. Enjoy.

The Gorillaz are giving away their album The Fall for free! (Well, you have to join their fan club… which costs money ($45). So if you’re already a member, than – magic! – it’s free. If not, well, yeah…). The boys wrote and recorded this on an iPad whilst on tour earlier this year – apparently iPads aren’t just great for Angry Birds, but recording albums too? Who knew? Stream it below or head on over to their website to download it.

Film Black Swan: A Scary Tale

Black Swan, Natalie Portman

In preparation for Natalie Portman’s role as “Nina” in director Darren Afronosksy’s (Pi, The Wrestler) dark take on classic ballet Swan Lake -“Black Swan”, Natalie has quipped that she shed 20 pounds from her already demure 5’3”frame as part of her transformation from “The Other Boleyn Girl” into ballerina. “There were some nights that I thought I literally was going to die,” Portman said. “It was the first time I understood how you could get so wrapped up in a role that it could sort of take you down.”

Music Peter Hook : A Founding Father of New Wave

January 3, 2011 - 11:53 am

Peter Hook

You may not realize it, but you’ve probably heard the opening bassline to New Order’s “Age of Consent” — although nowadays you likely heard it in a commercial for a car or some other product. ‘Twas written by Peter Hook, the bassist for New Order, formerly known as Joy Division — one of the very first bands of the 80s New Wave movement, and an inspiration for hundreds of modern acts who have ripped them off.

Along with “Age” Hook penned countless other gems with New Order from inception until their recent break-up in 2007.  He left to pursue other endeavors like founding now- legendary club The Hacienda, and produce other bands like The Stone Roses. From the days of “Blue Monday” until the more synthed-out Brotherhood LP and tracks like “Bizarre Love Triangle”, Hook’s known for his huge inspiration on legions of bass players — many of whom will go on record as hating a lot of new wave music — partly because he always maintained an active presence in the recording process and never let himself get drowned in the mix. The bass was up front, in-your-face, and flawless.

On Red Bull Music Academy right now, you’ll get a playlist of some of The Master’s preferences, including The Smiths, The Buzzcocks, and a host of countless other bands that influenced him.
