Gallery Music NOFX: Success Is A Drag

January 14, 2011 - 7:51 am

Legendary punks NOFX are known for pushing boundaries.

Their cutting edge documentary NOFX: Backstage Passport shocked TV viewers with their global escapades in debauchery on tour when it aired on Fuse in 2008. Earlier this year, singer Fat Mike’s alter ego Cokie The Clown got banned from Emo’s in Austin, Texas when he served what appeared to be urine-infused tequila to an audience of unsuspecting fans (it later proved to be an elaborate hoax). Now for the band’s latest exploit: NOFX dressed in full drag for their New Year’s Heave party at the Wiltern.

Gallery Los Angeles Drinking with Dinosaurs

January 14, 2011 - 7:46 am

Gulping down beers with the skeletons of a Tyrannosaurus Rex and Triceratops breathing down your back, dancing to DJs as they nonchalantly spin in front of elephants on the Serengeti Plains, listening to buzz worthy bands as they perform for audience members that include Grizzly bears and buffalo…sound like a typical Friday night? Probably not for most of you, but that’s the whole point.

Video Bruno Mars: Just the Way You Are

January 13, 2011 - 2:46 pm

Despite the fact that popular radio has this song on once an hour, I like it. It’s a sweet little feel good ditty that sticks. And the video is equally precious with its unassuming young love in bloom. However, I find it incredibly hard to imagine that the generation listening to Bruno Mars gets the cassette tape reference. Where did they even find a cassette tape player…the Smithsonian?

Regardless, people of a certain age will be won over by this nod to times when your music spun round and round on little wheels of tape. Enjoy!

British Sea Power - Valhalla Dancehall

A new one from UK giants British Sea Power, Cake gives us the long-awaited follow-up to 2004′s Pressure Chief, apparently there’s really a band called Steel Magnolias (with a singer that eerily resembles Dolly Parton…if only the guy looked like Burt Reynolds), and Minnesota’s own Tapes N’ Tapes should climb even higher on the Billboard charts this time with Thank You, Happy Birthday, they’ve paid their dues over a 7+ year career and 3 albums. See ya in a week or so.

Art/Design Charles Bukowski: The Inspiring Tale of Los Angeles’ Most Drunken, Prostitute-Addicted Writer

January 12, 2011 - 9:44 am

Bukie.

Ask any author worth his weight in rejection letters, and they’ll likely agree that Charles Bukowski was the most drunken and depraved of all writers ever to emerge from the City of Angels. And kind of understandably –  he survived a terrible childhood, three marriages, several dozen prostitutes of unusually ill repute, and a 14-year stint at the Post Office, only to die of leukemia at age 73.

For instance, as a letter he got from Story Magazine read:

“…this is a conglomeration of stuff so full of idolized prostitutes, morning-after vomiting scenes, misanthropy praise for suicide etc… that it is not quite for a magazine of any circulation at all.”

Music Mount Kimbie’s Minimalist Wall of Sound

January 12, 2011 - 9:43 am

mount_kimbie

An England-based duo, Dominic Maker and Kai Campos have formed Mount Kimbie out of an appreciation for what would perhaps best be called a ‘minimalist wall of sound.’ They’re schizoid and erratic, remaining still and almost silent for moments at a time; there’s little else besides strange little noises and blips. These quieter tracks are interspersed between others like “Ruby”, an almost somber affair with its strange and ambient noise — and then on songs like “Carbonated” and “Mayor” they’re jumping around in a frenetic rush, as if they’ve suddenly had a change of heart.

Their recordings run deep, with thick ambient layers of different rhythms and melodies. It’s great late-night headphone listening or for chilling in your car after a crummy day at work. If you’re familiar with acts like Hammock or tracks like “Music for the Head” by Porcupine Tree, or even some stuff like Sugur Ros, you may have an idea of what they’re up to.

You can hear Dominic and Kai on Red Bull Music Academy now, discussing their recording process, and also sharing what music inspired them.

Art/Design Don’t Let Anybody Yuck Your Yum

January 11, 2011 - 9:27 am

As I mentioned briefly in my magical music post, I’m one week into my three-week stay in good ol’ London and finding myself falling even more in love with this city. I’m lucky enough to get over here several times a year but generally when I’m over I feel rushed to squeeze everything in – seeing friends, having quality time with the boy, smashing in my favorite foods (oh Amigos, you make the best chicken and bacon sandwich in the world) and bars, making runs to Boots and Topshop, being dragged to Forbidden Planet and whatnot. So it’s been completely wonderful to just relax and enjoy the city, putter about and explore.

I dipped into a number of galleries this week but the following are my favorites.
