Last Thursday, Gallery 1988 in Hollywood hosted the reception for The Ghost of Delilah and Other Stories – an unprecedented group show curated by NYC’s Travis Louie. Travis, known for his sepia-toned, photo-realistic depictions of monsters and fantasy creatures, invited artists to collaborate with him on a series of drawings, featured in the show alongside his paintings.
Many of the pieces were created in the style of exquisite corpse, with artists unaware of what their collaborator’s drawing will be – the only requirement was graphite. The pieces include work by Craola, Chet Zar, Lola, Fred Harper, Molly Crabapple, Dave Chung, Ewelina Ferruso, John Park, Lisa Gloria, and myself, each artist showcasing their individual technique beside Louie’s signature delicate, feathery drawings.
The resulting work is unique, whimsical, and kind of a great deal for art collectors, who get two artists’ work in one piece. In Ewelina Ferruso’s collaboration, fuzzy bunnies float around one of Travis’ creatures, who dreams of being a bunny, too. Molly Crabapple made Travis’ Wendell dream of mermaids, I made his pug dream of space-flight, Fred Harper’s gas-masked villain picked flowers from Louie’s Bill’s head, and that’s just a few examples of the interaction between contrasting styles and worlds, which makes this exhibit especially compelling. The Ghost of Delilah and Other Stories is only up until Christmas – don’t miss out!
