So & So is Amie Miriello, Brandon Rogers, Bana Haffar, Adam Hanson, and Jay Dmuchowski – who prefers to be called Raisin Higgins. The band came together when Amie, an established singer in the Los Angeles area, and childhood friend Jay teamed up with producer Rob Wells to form the ultimate songwriting team. It wasn’t long after that the duo sought out the perfect partners in crime and the project matured into a full-fledged band. With the addition of American Idol Season six contestant and soulful singer Brandon, Adam on drums, and bassist Bana, So & So came to fruition in September 2010. The feisty five and I sat down for some laughs as they discussed their new album on the horizon and big tour plans for 2011. In between interview questions and technically off the record, the band and I bonded over intimate descriptions of their colons and jokes they have painfully refrained from saying in front of Mormon audiences.

This week, the queen of the striptease becomes queen of The Sunset Strip, when burlesque icon Dita Von Teese shimmies into a three night stint at The Roxy Theatre. Earlier this week, the iconic beauty took a break from rehearsals to speak with The Roxy Theatre about what stirs her martini and what gets her tassels twirling. Here’s what she had to say…

Music The Kronos Quartet: Making Weird Beautiful Again
Arguably, few other bands in the history of the world are as weird, as brilliant, and probably even as under-appreciated as The Kronos Quartet. From its embryonic stages in the early 1970s, founder David Harrington states how he was primarily inspired by fellow noisemaker/music experimentalists, the infamous and equally-strange George Crumb and The Black Angels.
Like many prodigies, he started young — 12 to be exact, when he got together his first string quartet. It took, and years later he was experimenting, taking the theretofore concept of a string quartet and and pushing it over the boundaries of what was accessible. From the Hitchcockian, Psycho -like violin screeching, all the way to “Dark Was the Night”, which is little more than the incessant plucking of numerous stringed instruments, the screech of bows on un-tuned strings, or a re-creation of the soundtrack to Bela Lugosi’s Dracula, Kronos has proved themselves as among the strangest and most haunting classical/experimental/soundtrack formations in contemporary music.
Kronos’ sounds have been in films like Heat and 21 Grams; chances are, ye’ve heard them before. If not, that’s what Red Bull Music Academy Radio is for, and you can check it out now.
interview Head to Head with Demolicious, LA Derby Dolls Co-Founder
Rebecca Ninburg – better known as “Demolicious” – is the amazing co-founder of the Los Angeles Derby Dolls. She’s been a pioneer in the sport of roller derby since 2003, and today there are more than 400 women’s roller derby leagues across the country. On the eve of the Red Bull Banked Jam in Chicago against the Windy City Rollers, Ninburg (pictured above) sat down with us to share her thoughts on today’s derby and the upcoming game.
Fashion Beyond H&M: The Hottest Scandinavian Designers Right Now
It’s really annoying when the fashion industry declares something to be having “a moment” – the implication being that the other 51 weeks out of the year, that “something” has not even entered their minds (like healthy runway models). So let’s not say that Scandinavia is having “a moment;” rather, it’s more like an avalanche of fashion, art, music, and design talent sure to become household names like stereotypical stalwarts H&M, Ikea, Bang & Olufsen, and Abba.
Music ChinaShop’s 2010 Infinite Playlist
Well, it’s not quite infinite, but we will be adding to it between now and the end of the year! But in the meantime, enjoy our nifty little SoundCloud playlist packed with songs from the past 347 days that really carved a niche in our brains. We’ve dropped a bit of everything in here, from the rousing beats of Groove Armada (nominated for a Grammy!) and the Midnight Juggernauts to the front porch balladry of Frazey Ford and Lou Rhodes. Double bonus: most of these tracks are downloadable and ready to be added to your own playlists. Enjoy the music, and stay tuned for some more ChinaShop Best Of’s!
Music Keri Hilson Turns It On
Over the years the list of female artists who went from virginal to bad girl has expanded. Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Miley Cyrus and Rihanna, to name a few, are all examples of female artists who by their sophomore album unleashed their inner sexual deviant. Taylor Swift might be next, but in the meantime, there’s Keri Hilson.
Hilson started in the entertainment industry as a songwriter for artists such as Britney Spears, Usher, Ciara, Ludacris, and now is a popular R&B singer in the limelight herself. She eased into her singing career crooning sweet songs about love and broken hearts. Dressed sexy and feminine, she still left plenty to the imagination. And then, like another Lindsay Lohan get-out-of-jail-free rehab stint, Hilson put out a video earlier this week that has her fans going hmmmmm???
Music What Its Really Like to Try to Break Into the Music Industry
Thanks to the fine folks at xtranormal.com for developing this amazing technology that allows you to create your own movies by typing. Its pretty fun playing out your most irritating conversations, or your most fantastic ones. I particularly liked the above commentary on the state of the Music Industry. I couldn’t have said it better myself. Only, you know, in a slightly less creepy robot voice.
