I’ve lived in Los Angeles for over three years and never had the urge to step onto the Metro until this past Saturday. I’m not a fan of public transportation. Something about cramming into a tiny train car underground and being smashed up against random strangers just doesn’t sit right with me. That was of course until I learned that under the city of Los Angeles resides not only the metro system but also an entire community of art. The first Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday of every month, residents of Los Angeles are given the opportunity to meet at designated stations for a complimentary two-hour tour of the Metro Art Program’s featured station exhibits. The program was founded in 1989 as a means to incorporate art into the Los Angeles transit system with the purpose of beautifying transportation stations and engaging riders with a cultural background of the city. To date, the program has commissioned over 300 artists for various station projects. Each station has its own unique imagery, which ties in the local neighborhood aesthetics with the theme of transportation as a whole.

Music Ozomatli Thrill-ers the Crowd
“We played a show just so we could steal Uli,” spat Ozomatli’s Wil-Dog Abers out back this night at some shady sound studio somewhere in North Dallas, TX. “Ozomatli’s always been… kind of a competitive band. Our roots go back to where Uli was in two bands.” Wil-Dog continues speaking now of the “solo Ozo” Ulises Bella. “He was in our band and the band that we were opening up for at Viper Room. And our whole purpose was to steal Uli from this band he had this allegiance with… and we did.” And I believe it.

For those who aren’t familiar with this iconic cameraman, Greg Gorman is widely celebrated as an American portrait photographer with an ability to capture celebrities in an honest and sensual light. Greg is known for his black and white photos that uncover the bona fide personality of Hollywood’s most celebrated talent, which has led him to be featured in magazines such as GQ, Interview, Life, Vogue, Newsweek, Rolling Stone, Vanity Fair, The London Times, Detour, and Harper’s Bazaar. Featured Gallery Music Florence & The Machine Take Over The Wiltern
As I walked up to L.A.’s Wiltern Theater on Saturday, I glanced at the sign that read “Florence & The Machine Nov 6, 7, 8 Sold Out,” a symbol that a city so saturated with musicians can still make time to celebrate worthy talent. 89.9 (KCRW) was a weekend hero as they hosted the beloved Florence Welch and her almighty backing band she’s affectionately labeled “The Machine.” Fans gathered outside the Wiltern begging anyone within the venue’s vicinity for extra tickets. One gentleman was so persistent that he asked me multiple times if I could provide him with tickets, in the hopes that I had magically unearthed a pair in the five minutes that passed before I saw him again.
Music Street Sweeper Social Club Tonight at the Roxy
Featuring the blazing guitar of Tom Morello and the intense vocal stylings of The Coup’s Boots Riley, Street Sweeper Social Club is more than a band, its a Movement. SSSC is performing tonight at the Roxy theater in Hollywood. If you have not yet heard of the band and/or you are a fan of Rage Against the Machine, you will love SSSC and you should get your tush down to Sunset Blvd. for one heck of a show.
Music A Young Photographer’s Voodoo Experience
Music has always been a huge part of my life, so when I was given the opportunity to start photographing festivals I jumped at it. The 2010 Voodoo Experience is only the second gig I’ve shot and it was certainly one of the most memorable things I’ve ever done. I wasn’t really sure what to expect when I stepped through the gates on Day 1. There I was; a 19 year old college student with press access. This was the big leagues and I didn’t even realize it.
Music Magical Properties hits Chicago
The amount of options on Halloween weekend this year for live music in Chicago was dumbfounding yet word of the Magical Properties Tour stopping by the Double Door was hard to pass up. While The Gaslamp Killer and Daedelus have both made repeat appearances individually in Chicago during 2010, seeing the two on the same bill outside of L.A. is a rarity—one only heightened by the addition of 12th Planet and Teebs to this ridiculous bill of beatsmiths.
Music Red Bull Rock the Route : Young Jesus vs. Brighton, MA
If I remember correctly from those battle of the bands competitions I witnessed in high school, you’re usually stuck with half-assed garage groups, and, depending on your rate of alcohol consumption, the musicianship may or may not improve over the course of the evening.
But it may be best to stay sober for Red Bull’s Rock the Route, a tour-de-force which escalates the talent, the competition, and the pressure of what would otherwise be just another BOTB event. I didn’t want to miss a moment with Brighton, MA or Young Jesus, both Chicago-based indie bands who’d never ventured outside their home state. Tonight both were to be baptized in the debauchery of the infamous Viper Room and its tiny stage, which still seems best suited for a troupe of munchkins. One group had to wedge themselves onto the stage, set up, play fast, and break down faster so the next group could get their turn.
Music Music Magic 11/5/10
This week has been ridiculously busy but seriously awesome: Halloween weekend plus kicking it at the famed MSR Studios every night this week with The Roots, Miniature Tigers and Shiny Toy Guns as they rehearse for Red Bull’s Soundclashes taking place later this month in Atlanta and Phoenix. Hard to believe sometimes that this is my job. Pretty incredible. That being said, I’m most happy it’s the weekend and am looking forward to cheering my friend Tess on as she runs the New York City Marathon on Sunday!!
So speaking of The Roots (all of whom are amongst the nicest guys I’ve ever met, such wonderful and immensely talented men), check out their performance of “Maniac” (which I wrote about the other week) with St. Vincent, Kid Cudi and Cage on Jimmy Fallon.
