AWOLNATION crashed on Wilshire Blvd on Wednesday night, their spacey dance-punk and multi-genre madness a perfect foil for the El Rey’s decadent ballroom elegance: chandeliers and wine glasses shook to the pounding rhythms of “MF” and “Burn it Down” as the quintet — dressed down in some seriously dapper duds (and braving some wicked feedback early in the set) – took to the stage performing their first big hit, “Sail.”

Music The New Girl Talk Mash-terpiece: Free to the Masses
The latest Girl Talk mash-terpiece has arrived and guess what, you can download it for free right here on the old inter-web. The album, titled All Day, is composed mostly, if not entirely, of samples from other artists and can be downloaded as a single file or as a series of mp3′s. All Day opens with Black Sabbath’s War Pigs linked to Jay-Z, Luda, and 2 Pac’s lyrics and from the first downbeat your party juices start percolating. I’ve already started choreographing my 90 minute dance routine, Have you? Go download All Day now and make sure to stretch first. Oh, and to help you follow along, check out this awesome “Mashup Breakdown” for a chronological play by play of the artist referenced in each song. You can also catch Girl Talk at a city near you. Check out the All Day supported tour dates here.
Gallery Music Fitz and the Tantrums Take the El Rey Back in Time
” I know one thing,” declares singer Michael Fitzpatrick near the opening of his set — his mop of hair and brow already caked with sweat after a mere three or four songs – “WE DON’T NEED NO LOVE SONG!!” And predictably for fans, the 8-piece thus dives head-first into their song of the same title, off their head-spinning debut.
But when you look around, there’s room for nothing but love at the ‘ol El Rey tonight. Couples of all ages and races and lifestyles are groping each other, cuddling, coddling; Fitz and his gang are clearly an audio aphrodisiac and I’m going to start buying some of their records.
Featured Gallery Music Sine Language With The Crystal Method’s Ken Jordan
For those savvy to the electronic music world, The Crystal Method needs no introduction. The top American dance music duo composed of Ken Jordan and Scott Kirkland, who last year released Grammy-nominated album Divided By Night, has teamed up with LMFAO on their latest project, Sine Language EP. The disc contains a single edit of the track Sine Language, as well as seven brand new remixes brilliantly reworked by Richard Vission, Datsik, Metasyn, Omega, Moonbeam, Von Ukuf, and Future Funk Squad. In support of the November 16th release date, The Crystal Method has selected a few lucky cities to grace with their DJing skills and fortunately for us, a stop at Hollywood’s Avalon made the cut.

Who doesn’t enjoy a good mashup? Thanks German Ben Stiller!
New Multi-Mash-Up by Ben Stilller aka Mashup-Germany.
Ben Stilller:
“This is a mashup with a special topic. It’s all about saying goodbye or missing somebody. I took several chart breaker songs with these topics and put them together in a pretty intense multi mashup with Pink’s “Raise your glass”. You might need to listen to it a couple of times, before you get used to all the stuff that is going on in this track. Watch out for the lyrics and enjoy! If you like it, please tell the world about it.”
Music Daft Punk Helms Tron: Legacy Soundtrack
The pressure that accompanies directing a movie as big as Tron: Legacy doesn’t sound altogether different from that of living on the game grid: much like Kevin Flynn himself, helmsman Joe Kozinski was literally living in another world for quite a long time, complete with technical malfunctions, multiple personalities (and/or programs), and even last-minute swerves in a race to avoid disaster.
“I just finished the movie Wednesday,” laughs Kosinski, plunking himself down in one of the plush red chairs at Apogee, inside famed LA indie radio giant KCRW on Saturday. “3 years of my life, and I’m less than 72 hours back in reality.”
In his conversation with KCRW Music Director and Legacy Music Supervisor Jason Bentley, Kozinski admitted that one of those very last changes in fact was to switch out one part of the score with another, and put it at the film’s closing credits. Afterwards, they dove right into a lengthy behind-the-scenes look at the soundtrack, and previewed some of its best cuts.
Gallery Music Battle of the Beats: Chicago Hosts Red Bull Big Tune Finals
Over the past six years, the formula behind the Red Bull Big Tune producer battle hasn’t been messed with much—two beat makers still face off in multiple rounds to see who has the more crowd-pleasing track. And judging by the 2010 Red Bull Big Tune Finals at Chicago’s Metro, hip-hop heads across the country are still dedicated to showing up and making noise for their favorite beat.
Gallery Music Juke Kartel: A Perfect Mix of Pop and Circumstance
A Night on the Strip, Part 2:
Ah, another night in Hollywood. And another innocent, virgin band’s relentless hazing on the infamous Sunset Strip. Actually, that’s not entirely accurate – Juke Kartel has played the Roxy before, at least once. But on this particular night, it was a chance to jam under the watchful eye of Tommy Lee, who first brought his brand of glam/sleaze rock to own the Strip decades ago.
Fashion Housing Works 7th Annual Fashion for Action Event
“Where’s the Marc Jacobs?” a frantic fashionista yelled from across the room, while sockless Thom Browne groupies modeled button-ups and demanded, “Is purple my color?” People were indeed changing in the aisles, despite the available dressing rooms (sample sale habits die hard); at one point we tried to add a fellow shopper’s unattended coat to our pile of wares. Oops! Welcome to the Housing Works 7th annual Fashion for Action sample sale, which kicked off this past weekend in Housing Works’ Chelsea location with cute fashion kids, plenty of booze, and a store full of primo merchandise.
