Florence and the Machine has landed on the shores of the US, touched down on American soil, and exploded into the scene more robustly than the illegal firecrackers sold on the side of the road in the state of Indiana. The UK-based band sizzled at the VMA’s, racking up nominations for 4 MTV Video Music Awards, picking up the award for Best Art Direction for the “Dog Days are Over” video, and topping off the evening with a triumphant performance that served as a powerful announcement of their arrival to the United States music scene. Lead vocalist, Florence Welch is an icon in her hometown, but still resides with her parents. She has a voice and a style that is distinguishably hers and wears a gown that she considers haunted. With the upcoming shows selling out, everyone wants a piece of “Flo.” I was lucky enough to nab the songstress to discuss some very important topics such as how she considers subjects like subatomic particles to be perfect inspiration for songwriting.

Oddity Dig Deep And Get Mortified
For most of us the awkward creations of our adolescence are safely tucked away in the back of a closet or in the deep reaches of the attic. We stumble upon these relics while packing or spring-cleaning, we laugh, cringe, reminisce and then tuck our creations back in the boxes where they live. Then there are the few among us who drag out old journals, letters, poems, lyrics, plays, home movies, and art and present them publicly. Welcome to the world of Mortified, a hybrid of stand up comedy, performance art and show and tell; a meeting of comedy and catharsis.

Gallery Los Angeles The Barbie Sponsored “Warholian” at Royal T
Royal/T has shifted themes and turned its focus to all things Andy Warhol. The popular Culver City cosplay café kicked off “The Warholian” on Thursday with a glitzy party sponsored by Barbie. Festivities commenced with a Barbie pink carpet at 6:00pm graced by celebs such as Nic Novicki (HBO’s Boardwalk Empire) and CSI’s Catherine Willows.
Herds of SoCal-ers lined up at the door to view popular Andy Warhol pieces like Skull (Green), Electric Chair, Barbie, and Black Marilyn in addition to pieces from Jim Hodges, Yan Pei-ming, Takashi Murakami, Sean Landers, Damien Hirst, Adam McEwen, and many other Warhol-inspired artists also in the exhibit curated by Eric C. Shiner, the Milton Fine Curator of Art at The Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh. Food was catered by Ludo Lefebvre and the Grilled Cheese Truck, who had a special Warholian menu with selections like Ate Elvises, made with a banana puree, peanut butter, Nutella and apple wood bacon. DJ Diabetic, Emcee Insulin, and DJ David J entertained the crowd as guess sipped on glasses of Dom Perignon’s limited edition, ‘A Tribute to Warhol’ Vintage 2002 champagne.
Royal/T’s gift shop transformed into a Barbie paradise offering t-shirts, headbands, dangly Barbie earrings, and other pink accessories. There was a selection of Andy Warhol inspired magnets, prints, and household necessities such as the Andy glasses shaped USB port for sale. The Lisa Perry pop-up shop sold Warhol dresses, giant hamburger stools, giant ketchup and coke bottles, giant ice cream cones, and a plethora of kooky goodies.
Music Eglo Records: Adding a Bit More Glo To Your Soul
Eglo Records is the brainchild of Alex Nut, a brave (or crazy) young soul from the UK who cobbled together a bunch of fellow music enthusiasts for the soul purpose of having a place to call home. It just so happened that the ‘home’ became a label where he could create his own funky R&B rhythms, as well as spread the word of others just out of the limelight. Alex had already spent his formative years dirtying his hands with the likes of his other group, Rinse FM, and partner-in-rhyme Sam Shepherd (the other Sam Shepherd) — and thus the time had come to give a little love to guys who just weren’t getting their share of attention.
Enter Floating Points, a burgeoning new musical prodigy who boasted the amazingly talented voices of Fatima and Shuanise, two of the UK soul scene’s most talked-about vocalists — and Alex was going to be sure to look after his baby closely. But as the label’s biography states, this is a labor of love amongst some tight-knit friends who view the label as a home, which is really what’s made it throw out such unique music, and keep that family feeling while avoiding corporate pitfalls. Other rising stars like West London’s own FunkinEven are aiming to help the label rise above, as well promote an already blossoming West London dance scene. You can check out Fatima on Myspace right now — but more importantly, get a listen of some of the label’s newest track and acts on Red Bull Music Academy Radio.

Music Delphic Help Keep Manchester Alive
If you’ve never seen 24 Hour Party People, you might not know the incredibly important effect the Manchester Scene had on U.K. dance/New Wave, especially in the early 80s. And if you have, then the extent of your knowledge still might be a little iffy — for many, it dwindles after the Happy Mondays’ Forty-Five E.P. and New Order’s early days with Tony Wilson and Factory Records. All that said, Delphic is among the newest in the Manchester scene’s legions of post-New Wave brilliance, a trio that mixes the dance-pop of New Order with the catchy rock and pop of The Stone Roses, and the sweet, sometimes sappy symphonic sounds of post-Smiths Morrissey. I’m quite the lad for saying it… but they’re lovely. Ugh, I need to take a shower! But the band’s possibly the newest of the new — less than a year and a half on the UK scene, in fact — and within a few months managed to attract the attention of Polydor and a few other big labels. Even though I’m used to slam-dancing and other primal and sopho-moronic acts, these songs really just make me want to go frolic in a field. After watching 24HPP though, it would preferably be under the influence of any number of illegal substances. Right now, Red Bull Music Academy Radio will suffice.
Music The J Dilla Founation For the Arts
J Dilla, born James Dewitt Yancey, was a Grammy award winning record producer and artist who emerged from the mid-1990s underground hip-hop scene in Detroit, Michigan. According to NPR.org, he was one of the music industry’s most influential hip-hop artists. J Dilla changed hip-hop culture and the music industry as we know it. His creativity has molded and contributed to the sounds of recording artists such as De La Soul, Slum Village, Phat Kat, Common, The Pharcyde, Busta Rymes, Erykah Badu, and many more. On February 10, 2006 at the young age of 32, we lost J Dilla to Lupus and the rare blood disease TTP.
But J Dilla’s legacy lives on with The J Dillah foundation. The J Dilla Foundation is a non-profit charitable institution that serves to help fund inner-city music programs and provide scholarships to students attending schools that have progressive music curricula. The foundation was started by Maureen Yancey, mother of J Dilla. Maureen proclaims, “The J Dilla Foundation seeks to be a staple in the movement for progressive music education. We also hope to be leaders in the efforts to enhance and develop arts programs in urban communities.” Target cities for 2010 are Detroit, Atlanta, and Los Angeles.
