Review How do You Walk the Labyrinth?

August 4, 2010 - 10:01 am

Spiritual Gardens

Traffic, work, bosses, finances, family…there are lots of things in life that you need an escape from every now and then.  Everyone has their own ingredient for recovery: yoga, a vacation, a tall glass of wine, several shots of vodka, a walk on the beach… we are all very familiar with our options here, but have you ever considered walking a labyrinth as a form of rejuvenation?

Peace Awareness Labyrinth and Gardens is a spiritual oasis within the city limits of Los Angeles that offers a daytime retreat for people that are looking to get away from all those things you’d love to get away from.  I popped in for a tour of the gardens, which are tucked behind the gates of a historic mansion dating back to the 1900’s, acting currently as a church of the movement of spiritual awareness.  In a nutshell, the grounds are dedicated to meditation and when you walk outside, you’ll understand why.

Music Cosmo Baker with Kon and Amir

August 3, 2010 - 9:57 am

Cosmo and Crew

Two of the most elite names in DJing recently joined forces at The Sound Table for an exclusive live set on Red Bull Music Academy Radio. Mixing what sounds like 70s porno music with the very best of rhythm and funk that same decade had to offer, Cosmo Baker is already considered to be at the very forefront of his profession as a “world-renowned partymaker” — and a master of everything from electronica, disco, and someone whom other DJs have been quick to praise. Take DJ Jazzy Jeff, for instance, who was quick to point out that “when it comes to keeping the Philly Music tradition going, Cosmo has it locked. His knowledge is incredible and his Crates are deep and his passion and skills makes him one of my favs.”The man knows how to network to, having remixed everyone from Moby to Notorious B.I.G. Hailing from Philly, home of ?uestlove, King Britt, (and having been mentored by the latter), Cosmo Baker made enough of a name for himself to travel outside his hometown and meet up with two other industry legends. Kon and Amir, Cosmo’s current partners in crime, are clearly not ones to eschew their roots and origins in favor of current trends and flavor-of-the-week remixes; a philosophy that favors the old school over the new has earned them no fewer accolades than Baker himself: “Their compilations and mixtapes are classics and represent a style of Djing that’s true to the essence of Hip-Hop,” renowned DJing rag A-Trak states. See for yourself what all the hype is about below.

Featured Music Ima Robot Enters the 5th Dimension

August 2, 2010 - 10:51 am

Los Angeles based, indie/new wave band Ima Robot have been through their fair share of music industry travails – most of the drama stemming from their involvement with the questionable politics of being signed to a major label contract. What is it that Q-Tip said again so prophetically on the track “Check the Rhyme”? Oh yeah, “Industry rule #4080, record company people are shady.”

All the label issues culminated in the band taking a break from their situation and stealing some time away to refocus and try new things. Ima Robot founding member, Timmy Anderson states it this way.

“We were all a bit tweaked from our last year or so in the major label game – I’ll leave it at that!  Some life happened, a lot of work and side projects went down (Guns n Bombs, Edward Sharpe, Werewolf Heart records) and we all just went off exploring other musical endeavors and interests.”

Music Lucrecia Dalt: Experiment All You Like

August 2, 2010 - 10:49 am

Lucrecia Dalt

When your name is Lucrecia Dalt, chances are that no matter what you do, people are going to find it impossible to forget your name. So why not start an experimental indie-rock band and really stake your claim in the annals of music history? All right, so she’s a little young and just getting her start to go that far, but if the Columbian native plays her cards right, she could be the next Siouxsie or maybe even a female Frank Zappa. For many, she may verge on the ‘too experimental’ side of things sometimes, but stick with it: just when you might be getting lost, she brings you back through the sheer anarchic talent of building harmonies from the most unusual of sounds: seagulls, what sound like hacksaws, god-knows-what-else, and her own beautifully-woven layers of vocal melodies. That’s not to be said they’re there just because they’re there : she’s got a method to her madness, and if you give it a chance you’ll be rewarded, or at the very least, intrigued at her varied attempts to get away from the status quo. Yeah, so Lucretia’s strange, weird, maybe even the music equivalent of a musical P.T. Barnum, but that’s what makes her stand out, and even harder to forget (along with that name). Fans of Bjork might find some similarities here in the vocal arrangements — indeed, at times she looks uncannily like her Icelandic counterpart, especially when she flashes that tight-lipped smile — but Lucrecia doubles her duty on a bass guitar, and it ain’t that easy to make it stand out like that. Brave souls who are so inclined can  head on over to Red Bull Music Academy Radio and get a listen of the talented musical prodigy.

Comic Books Comic-Con 2010: The Dark Horse Panel Gives a Peek at Upcoming Stuff: Gerard Way, Mike Mignola, Tim Truman, and Randy Stradley

August 2, 2010 - 10:48 am

Dark Horse 2010

Last but not least in our Comic-Con coverage: a quick look at upcoming events and goings-on with Dark Horse in the coming year (or two): A new series with Mike Mignola — the mastermind behind Hellboy — called Baltimore, which he’ll be working on with Ben Stenbeck. The brains at DH are also premiering some motion comics versions of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer and Conan the Cimmerian. If you’ve never seen motion comics, they’re basically the raw original version of an online comic, only certain parts of the body are animated, and a voice-over track/score are added. It’s a tricky process that’s sometimes a crapshoot, but can also add a little bit of depth to what was otherwise just another comic.
