Last but not least in our Comic-Con coverage: a quick look at upcoming events and goings-on with Dark Horse in the coming year (or two): A new series with Mike Mignola — the mastermind behind Hellboy — called Baltimore, which he’ll be working on with Ben Stenbeck. The brains at DH are also premiering some motion comics versions of Buffy: The Vampire Slayer and Conan the Cimmerian. If you’ve never seen motion comics, they’re basically the raw original version of an online comic, only certain parts of the body are animated, and a voice-over track/score are added. It’s a tricky process that’s sometimes a crapshoot, but can also add a little bit of depth to what was otherwise just another comic.
Gerard Way continues to do his Umbrella Academy thing, while The Goon is getting his own movie with the voices of Clancy Brown and Paul Giamatti. Other good news for you barbarian aficionados: revered artist Tim Truman will be returning to work on King Conan. And one of comics’ all-time greats, Jim Shooter, will be working on King Magnus: Robot Fighter, a Golden Age-gem resurrected for the new millennium. The same creative team behind Dead Red Redemption will also be returning for the series Mass Effect.
Randy Stradley will continue his work on Star Wars; comedian Patton Oswalt will continue writing the Firefly comic (we actually missed an interview with Oswalt by just a few seconds cause he had to jet back to L.A. for a gig –sheize!), and Creepy comics (see our other feature) is resurrected for a new series. And of course, don’t miss our other features for Comic-Con this year — lots of the almost-naked wandering around the exhibition halls, loads of tiny interviews with artists and writers, and more amazing photography by Zoetica Ebb.
