I don’t have to tell you that this week DC Comics released the new look for Wonder Woman, by Don Kramer.  It’s not only the comic universe that is in an uproar, but pretty much everyone that ever had a fond memory or attachment to the heroine. After all she was one of the only superheros who didn’t have a male counterpart come first. I mean, really…there wasn’t much of a need for a Wonder Man.

Just recently I started watching the original 1974 TV series with the gorgeous Linda Carter filling WW’s red leather boots. With the risk of dating myself, I remember catching episodes as a little girl and being absolutely titillated by her glossy brown hair and overt sexuality. My Mother thought she was a bit scandalous, which made me all the more interested in paying very close attention. I think for a lot of girls, Wonder Woman was the first female we had access to as a role model.

I mean, yes…the plot was ridiculous. Princess Diana, Amazon immortal who lives on a secret island populated with only women, rescues WWII pilot and habitual womanizer, Steve Trevor after his plane crashes. Smitten by the square jawed and mysterious man, Diana decides to leave the safety of the island to join Steve in the United States and takes on the persona of Diana Prince, assistant to Steve Trevor. As a kid there were always two things I never understood about this story. 1) why was the addition of simple eye glasses a believable way to completely mask the identity of Wonder Woman (Superman too if you consider it) and 2) how, if Diana was raised to never lie, could she so naturally take on the disguise of a highly classified position in the military as well as mimic all those people voices in order to get information or distract the bad guys.

However I digress, we are discussing fashion here and why Wonder Woman isn’t allowed to upgrade her wardrobe. I have to say, I agree with all the criticism, the new design is just awful. But its not because they changed it. Its because they changed it with a look that already seems out of date. Those shoulder pads, and the shiny black leggings – they just aren’t what comes to mind. Sure, let a girl have a little variety, but don’t mess with the dynamics of a good thing.

I’m not saying the above is a solution, but more a selection of current fashion articles that might have stood in just dandy for the old outfit. Let WW have a little fun already! Why’s she gotta look like  a warrior from the 9o’s who shops at American Apparel? What she stands for is a woman who is essentially pure but powerful! Listen, you’d never put Superman in a sweat suit, or Batman in a banana hammock. Why put WW in an outfit that belongs in the back of Joan Collins Dynasty collection. Please tell us you’re joking?
