Yep, that’s David standing on his head again… and yep those are “The New Politics,” A 3 piece Rock/Pop trio originally haling from Copenhagen Denmark. The group consisting of David Boyd, guitar/vocalist Soren Hansen, and drummer Poul Amaliel released their self-titled debut album June 13th of this year and played the Viper Room Tuesday night to a room full of zealous fans.
The album, recorded in New York and L.A., and released on RCA records, is the culmination of over 3 years of songwriting by band founders David and Soren. Over those 3ish years, the two wrote hundreds of song and tested many genre’s before finally stumbling onto a sound that you hear on the album. That sound called from a massive drummer and so, to complete the outfit, friend/songwriter/drummer Poul Amaliel was added to the group.
In person, The New Politics are a jovial, light-hearted / good-natured bunch who don’t take themselves too seriously. When I met up with Poul and Soren outside the club, the first thing they did was show me the furry white stuffed dildo they had just bought from adjacent “Hustler” Store (a gag gift for their esteemed TM Jake). While this was going on, singer David was busy smuggling in an under-aged fan desperate to catch the show.
The album features 10 songs, no-fillers, and plays from start to finish, blending catchy singles like “yea yea yea” (currently getting quite a bit of airplay) with deeper social commentary (New Generation).
Check out the album and be sure to catch the trio live. I’ll almost guarantee some break dancing, head-stands, and tom-foolery.
