Dean Motter is the legendary designer, illustrator, and writer most known for his masterpiece ‘Mister X Archives’ that launched the careers of other famous creators like Jaime Hernandez and Dave McKean. The collection, a fusion of Art Deco, German Expressionism and Film Noir, recently won Print magazine’s Regional Design Award and the PubWest Award. Motter has since released ‘Mister X: Condemned’ which continues to explore the philosophy of psychetecture – the idea that a city’s layout can influence its citizen’s emotional state – through antique futurism. His work is currently on exhibit at The Cité in Paris along side original art from Windsor McCay’s ‘Little Nemo’.

New York City Hester Street Fair
Exploring an outdoor market on a Sunday is a time-honored New York tradition. From single girls searching for the perfect vintage dress to old couples bickering lovingly over a pair of lampshades, they attract all types. On a good day at a market, you can find almost anything. Old photographs, back issues of your once-favorite magazine, almost unworn vintage boots & a pink rotary telephone? It’s yours for the taking!
Comic Books Guy Davis
Guy Davis is the celebrated artist of ‘B.P.R.D.’ and the creator of the haunting black-and-white graphic novel ‘The Marquis’, which ‘Hellboy’ creator Mike Mignola called, “beautiful, smart, and very disturbing.” Last year, Davis won the coveted Eisner Award for Best Penciller & Inker in the industry. Music DJ Muggs Vs. Ill bill – “Kill Devil Hills” Listening Session (07/15/2010)
The rotten apple has been in the firm grip of a sizzling heat wave for the last two weeks – and as any New Yorker will tell you, when it starts to really bake in Gotham, it’s something serious. It probably has something to do with all the skyscrapers holding in the heat and the concrete pavements emitting it so offensively to the city’s denizens. So anyways, it was a welcome pleasure to walk into DJ Premier’s “Headqcourterz” studios on the west of Manhattan for the Ill Bill/DJ Muggs listening session and see a nice spread of very-chilled Heinekens, Coronas and bottled waters set out for the invited guests. After cooling down with a few long sips of cold beer and ingesting a quick pizza slice, reality set in that I was actually lounging in the confines of hallowed rap history. “Headqcourterz” studios was formerly known as D&D, and this is the same location where rap gods like Jay-Z , Nas and Biggie recorded key cuts with DJ Premier for their classic debut albums: Reasonable Doubt, Illmatic and Ready to Die respectively. It’s also where Primo’s own group, Gangstarr (R.I.P. Guru) recorded classic albums in their extensive collection – epic albums like Hard to Earn, Moment of Truth and Daily Operation. No one has to tell you how special this place is – the gold and platinum plaques on the wall tell the story all too clearly.

Gallery Urban Exploration Detroit “Rock City” : Unpolished
On occasion, as I roam this vast urban jungle of ours, I will end up with a pile of images that can’t quite fit their square peg into a specific subject gallery’s round hole. Not that these misfits aren’t entertaining mind you, insert Danzig props here. They just tend to be reactions to some primal Ansel Adams synapses in me that I think you might enjoy, whilst on the clock…
Comic Books Chris Onstad: ‘Worst Song, Played on Ugliest Guitar’

Gallery New York City She’s My Coney Island Baby
…She’s my Coney Island giiirl. Tom Waits songs aside, Coney Island is a place of fable and legend. At least what’s left of it is. Ask a seasoned New Yorker about its history, and you’ll get an earful of freaklore, circus fairy tales, and nostalgia, along with anger at the merciless gentrification that’s been eating the peninsula alive since before WWII. Between the tearing down of amusements to make room for housing projects and resorts [and funnel out the “tawdry” entertainment and its community] to recent waves of family-friendly zoning, it will be a wonder if any of Coney Island’s history will remain in place five, or even two years from now.
Fashion Featured Bloodmilk: Supernatural Jewels For Surrealist Darlings
Miss Schnabel of Bloodmilk is not your average jeweler. You won’t see diamond engagement rings, mass-produced pendants or hoop earrings in her collection. Instead, she believes that jewelry provides “psychic armour.” Her work is thoughtful, & exquisitely strange.
If the love of your life is more a fan of the Brothers Grimm than Jon & Kate Plus 8, maybe a Bloodmilk bear tooth engagement ring is what she’s always dreamed of. Perhaps a sterling silver ouija planchette necklace is more her cup of tea. This is jewelery worn by unusual girls, the type who read tarot cards & prefer absinthe & wouldn’t be caught dead in Urban Outfitters. From two-finger owl skull rings to sparrow claw lariat necklaces, Bloodmilk pieces are dark but delicate, beautiful & obscene.
