On Saturday, the Department of Flying Vehicles opened its doors for the first time to a motley crowd of art and music-starved east-siders. Nestled right in the beating heart of Silverlake, it’s a new creative space conceived and brought to you by the inexhaustible masterminds behind LACMA Muse and Bizzarmy.
The throughly inspired launch featured art of all mediums. Upon my arrival I was greeted by a fire-controlling theremin, found myself hypnotized by interactive video installations, got happily lost in smaller rooms showcasing sculpture and sketches, boggled over a video-helmet, and bopped along to infectious beats. The Engine, my favorite mobile theater, was present alongside live music, paintings and more dressed-up peeps than my lens could capture, though I certainly tried.
If you’re longing for a place to motivate you, get those creative gears chugging and that ass shaking, I wholeheartedly suggest that you keep your eyes and ears peeled for the next Department of Flying Vehicles event. This venue and event have great potential to add a whole new dimension to the Silverlake and Hollywood art scene and nightlife, I can’t wait to see what develops.
