Music Thomas Dolby

April 5, 2010 - 2:57 pm

Dolby

Thomas Dolby will probably stick out to most of you as the “Blinded Me with Science” guy from the 80s, and a man unfortunate enough to have one of his songs featured on Howard the Duck, remembered by many as possibly the Worst Movie Ever Made. But there’s a lot about Dolby you may not know: in addition to being a regular contributor to the soundtracks of Grand Theft Auto and The Mind’s I video game series, he even developed a new downloadable file format called Rich Music Format (RMF) which improved the sound quality and quantity of sampled sounds in songs. Dolby’s started to give more attention to the science his song made him famous for: He spends most of his time devoted to his audio company, Beatnik, which is devoted to improving the quality of sound and synth technology. Plus, he dresses like a cyborg. Check out his latest and greatest hits on Red Bull Music Academy Radio.

Film Music North American Scum: “Speaking In Code” Longs For A Continental Techno Life

April 5, 2010 - 12:21 pm

david_day

Even before Eminem tossed out the ultimate diss, techno was a dirty word in the United States. And as anyone who has ever championed the music on these shores will tell you, Europe, with it’s thriving electronic music culture, is seen as the mecca for those whose taste lean towards the auster sounds while living in a decidedly unfriendly market. Speaking In Code wisely ignores the “why” usually asked when addressing techno’s lack of popularity in America. But it does confront the very real clash of passion and finance faced by American fans who need to go to sometimes absurd lengths to get their fix. Read the full story

Oddity The Best Of April Fools Day 2010

April 4, 2010 - 10:11 pm

apple_veranda

April Fools day used to be a chance to play a gag on a few close friends. But with the power of the internet, a simple joke can reach the entire globe in the course of 24 hours. Here’s a few of our favorite online gags from yesterday’s mischivities.

Apple Swithes to Veranda (IDSGN)
With all the ongoing buzz about the iPad dropping this weekend, what a perfect time to mess with Apple. Considering that most Mac owners are the create types who immediately know that Veranda refers to a font, this is a gag that hit it’s target demographic.

Deadmau5 Hospitalised Following Fight With Felix da Housecat (Mixmag)
The key to a good April Fools  prank is plausibility. Deadmau5 might be the newly crowned prince of American dance music, but rumors of him not being the friendliest rodent have been circulating for a while now. The only flaw in this gag was the off timing. Would it really take 5 days for news like this to hit the internet? Unlikely.

Pitchfork gives MGMT’s “Congratulations” a perfect 10.0 (Hipsterrunoff)
People have been making fun of Pitchfork’s rating system for almost as long as the website has been online. There’s even an entire site dedicated to critiquing Pitchfork’s reviews. Hipster Runoff’s mysterious Carls knows exactly where to prod the indie rock faithful, taking a jab at both their critical bible as well as one of the scenes biggest crossover bands.

Missing Manic Guitarist Turns Up Alive (BBC)
This is probably a clones site and not the actual BBC. Considering that Manic Street Preachers guitarist Richey Edwards disappeared in 1995 in a presumed suicide, this gag certainly had the element of surprise. But the overall taste of jesting about such a tragedy is questionable.

TextP (YouTube)
Some pretty big companies got in on the fun. Google changed their name to Topeka for the day, but this elaborate YouTube gag offering a system that converts video into a text-based stream to save the company money is both super clever and ultra-geeky.

Music Dam-Funk: The Ambassador of Boogie…and Funk

April 1, 2010 - 11:32 am

Dam-Funk

First off, Dam Funk is weird. Part of that weirdness is the unabashed mix of Casio keyboard-tinkering and early 80′s Motown melodies, which sound like something between Rockwell (you know, the “Sometimes I feel like somebody’s watchin’ me” dude) and a Michael Jackson studio outtake from Thriller, minus the excessive falsetto. “Toeachizown” is not only a snazzy way to spell a credo to live by, but one of several Delorian rides back into 1983 cruising through the streets of Jermaine Jackson and post-disco new wave rejects. “I Wanna Thank You for (Steppin Into My Life)” makes D-F’s tone-deaf croonings verge on endearing; I think of that sensitive nerd who sat in the back of high school chemistry class, wire-framed glasses and a bookbag full of Anne McCaffrey novels, secretly thankful that a cheerleader asked to borrow his bunson burner. (Dawn Monreal, if you’re reading this, see my contact info-Jeff). Nothing spectacularly original, but if you want a feel-good album with some infectiously catchy melodies to get you in the mood, you could do worse (there’s always that Rockwell guy, hahaha!!).
