Event Featured Gallery The Second Annual Streamy Awards: What a Fine Mess

April 14, 2010 - 10:28 am

I usually do everything in my power to avoid Hollywood, so when I learned I’d have to cover a red carpet event there (webisode/internet celebrities, collagen, and buttloads of perfume and fashion stuff…gee, I was a bit aprehensive), it’s accurate to say there was a bit of apprehension on my part. Nonetheless, I don’t think there could have been a better event for me than The Second Annual Streamy Awards at Los Angeles’ Orpheum Theater– which sort of summed up how I’d always thought of glitzy and glammy galas when there’s not a Pat O’Brien or Sugar Ray to polish any of the turds.

Art/Design Film Banksy Film Is A [Fantastic] Fraud

April 13, 2010 - 12:42 pm

banksy

Last night, the creme of LA’s street art scene gathered in downtown’s stunningly ornate Los Angeles theater to see the premier of Banksy’s latest buzz-worthy project, a full length film—Exit Through the Gift Shop. The film tracks the creation and meteoric rise of Mr. Brainwash, the street art (artifice) sensation who stunned LA’s art world last year by producing a mammoth show in the old CBS offices in Hollywood. The story line is well known: amateur videographer Thierry Guetta spends a decade videotaping street artists like Shepard Fairy, Invader and Banksy, documenting their own rise within the pop culture zeitgeist.  Banksy encourages Thierry to produce his own art show, which becomes a mammoth hit based on the buzz created by his affiliations with the street art elite. The end result is a new “name” artist of questionable talent, and a global art scene questioning its own hype. But how much of the story is fact, and how much is suspect? Banksy’s entire career is based around art as comic gag. Is it beyond him to orchestrate a narrative that confronts the hype befallen himself and his peers in the past few years? Here’s three reasons why Exit Through The Gift Shop might not be what it seems.

April 13, 2010 - 12:19 pm

For the past eight years during Miami’s Winter Music Conference, dance music masters known as Sasha and John Digweed throw what is arguably the party of the year.  And by “party of the year” I am not just referring to the thousands of options available during this very full week of every conceivable form of electronic music.  I am referring to all parties, everywhere, all year round. Going all out, Sasha and John rent a mega yacht and invite 400 close friends and fans to join them for this special event, the Sunset Cruise.  This will prove to be a peak experience in the lives of many of these party goers – not just of the year, but of their party-going careers.

Art/Design LEGO While You Shop

LEGO offers great customer service

We all love LEGOs. Yes, the suggested age range may cap off around 12 years old, but don’t even attempt to tell me if you came across a pile of these multicolored splendors that you wouldn’t spring at the chance to sit down and see what you could build! And who are these people telling us how old we have to be to play with them? Shouldn’t they make adult LEGOs? I mean think of the possibilities. They could even carry them in The Hustler Store…right next to all those goodies in the 18+ section.

Film Sex and the City 2

April 12, 2010 - 10:37 am

sex is better when it's one-on-one

In 2008, the entire fashion world had a collective eyegasm while gawping at the Sex and The City movie. While most people I know were flabbergasted and horrified by the story, the styling was a definite high-point. From the Vivienne Westwood bridal couture to that infamous studded belt, its aesthetic influence — just as it was during the show — was massive.

Music Warming Up For Coachella – DJ Sets By Coachella Performers 2010

April 12, 2010 - 9:58 am

Coachella might be known as one of the world’s finest rock festivals, but since it’s inception all the way back in 1999, the event’s promoters put as much focus on LA rave culture as they did catering to the alternative nation (now called the indie rock masses). From Daft Punk to Kraftwerk, many of Coachella’s greatest moments over the years have come from electronic music titans. Here’s a collection of sets from artists playing this year’s festival. The perfect collection of beats to get you warmed up for the desert.
