Music Coachella 2010: Faith No More Put the Soul Back in Hard Rock

April 19, 2010 - 8:39 pm

Faith No More @ Coachella 2010

Like MGMT, but in a much (much) different way, Faith No More fans are a relatively distinct bunch, often noticeable only in behavior: Take the exodus of Coheed and Cambria fans as they futilely tried to leave after their band’s billing, only to be caught in a swarm of rabid FNM’ers who flew forward like a f*#king battering ram, cutting a swath towards the stage through any poor schmucks in the way. A lot of Faith No More’s fans here were younger kids who’d never seen the band and had familiarized themselves with Patton and co. since their break-up 12 years ago. It made for a particularly merciless hazing, as the young punks were inducted into a world of stage diving, moshing, and random celebrity cameos — during “Ashes to Ashes,” singer Mike Patton’s friend Danny Devito scurried across the stage, giving us a goofy look before ducking quickly behind the drum riser.

Music Porcupine Tree, the Soundtrack for A Cinematic Soul

April 19, 2010 - 3:32 pm

Steve Wilson of Porcupine Tree

If you’ve ever heard Porcupine Tree, a band that mixes both experimental and traditional progressive rock with metal and a plethora of other styles (electronica, new wave, metal, film soundtrack), they might first seem like an odd fit for the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival. As lead singer/guitarist Steve Wilson and I discussed, things have changed for the better both in the festival and the label world. Minds are beginning to open a bit, and Porcupine Tree is one of several more experimental and sui generis groups that have found festival billing this big. If anything, Coachella 2010 proved it”ll be the first of many for them.

Music Them Crooked Vultures @ Coachella: When Giants Collide

April 17, 2010 - 3:27 pm

Them Crooked Vultures @ Coachella

As a drummer, it’s generally accepted that Dave Grohl’s one of the best and hardest-hitting of the past 20 years, and has arguably been the best part of every band he’s been in. Yeah, even that one. And with Friday night’s Coachella performance, Them Crooked Vultures were no exception. They just kind of destroyed the place. It’s probably because I’m slowly getting deaf ears in addition to the senility, lack of sense of direction and genuine aggravation the ghosts of concert past have bestowed upon me. But apart from MGMT, I can’t think of another band whose massive fanbase made it impossible for even pro photographers to get close. I’ve been to concerts where dull roars were the norm, but the fans of TCV are fanatical and feverish, a mob of white noise roar that had my ears ringing all night.

Music Coachella 2010: Swallow Johnny Rotten’s PiL

April 17, 2010 - 3:26 pm

Rotten is your leader

I don’t know why I still like Johnny Rotten. In the Sex Pistols and early days of Public Image Limited he seemed more of a red herring, go-for-broke sort of chap, always teetering on the fine line somewhere between indulging and impatient. A few of his longtime fans might feel that the guy has recently become soft in his old age. (Or maybe they’ve gone that route as well.) Perhaps it’s that vegetarianism or just a decision to be kinder and more endearing Rotten, sort of a funnily-cynical curmudgeon, always outspoken but perhaps not as mean-spirited in his outbursts. The first comparison that comes to mind is how Borscht Belt comedian Milton Berle was so ahead of his time years ago but ended up exchanging one-liners and punchlines with Muppets on Sesame Street. Rotten didn’t seem too too far off from that last part Friday evening. But he still proved he could deliver a great set, not give a shit if we liked it or not, and have the crowd eating out of his hand.

Art/Design Anthony Pontius Paints Peculiar

April 17, 2010 - 11:50 am

Another Anthony Pontius piece.

One of the greatest things about Anthony Pontius‘ series of primal/human hybrids is his willingness to take a slew of his own paintings — done in a variety of traditional media, slaved at for hours — and then take a pencil and graffiti all over it. I got a guilty bias towards guys like Anthony. He listens to old school thrash, seems to eschew the typical gallery scene, and has no respect for even his own art. Which is, by the way, f#&d up and amazing to look at…

Ameoba Records, Berkeley, CA

Ameoba Records, Berkeley, CA

Since it’s inception in 2007, Record Store Day has offered a beacon of support for the independent record store community decimated by the decline in music sales, especially in physical retailers. Just three years later, and RSD has become a major annual event, with dozens of marquee name artists offering up limited edition products and performances available exclusively at independent music retailers. ChinaShop asked a gang of our musician friends to tell us about their favorite record stores, living or dead, to help celebrate Records Store Day 2010, taking place on Saturday April 17th.

Featured Music Kid Sister Talks Tattoos and BBQ

April 15, 2010 - 9:27 am

Kid Sister

Melisa Young, aka Kid Sister, calls herself a nerd and I believe her. She called it a night relatively early after her show at Public Assembly in Williamsburg, loves talking about her family and won’t do a recording session unless she is alone and can concentrate. Plus, she, like my mother, uses the word, “snarkiest.” But don’t get her wrong, the girl knows how to have a good time. She can juke with the best of them, has been known to get tattoos on the fly with Paul Wall and always has a smile on.

New York City Springtime in the NYC

NYC in the Spring

The bumblebees murmur among the flowers, the blue skies seem endless & dog owners are out cruising other dog owners.  Yes, spring is finally here & it couldn’t have come at a better time.  Just when everyone in New York was about to hit their absolute limit with the cold weather, suddenly the sun came out, & everything seemed good again.
