Music Instra:Mental. Couldn’t Have Said it Better Myself

April 30, 2010 - 12:24 pm

More Mental than Instra...

Eccentric? Yes. Offbeat? A bit. But the greatest thing about Instra:Mental is that they aim to please no one… except themselves. With these two boys from London, the focus is less on melody than it is on beats and rhythm, hurtling break-neck and no-holds-barred. And like so many music duos on this here ChinaShop, they’re good. And random and chaotic and truly “pioneers of the ‘robo ballad’ as described by Red Bull Music Academy Radio, and ‘best breakthrough producers’ by DJ Mag for their work behind the console as well. With an array of dubstep and fast-as-hell drum and bass skills/technology under their belt, being armed with a slew of the latest and greatest in DJ technology doesn’t hurt either: having built their studio (as well as their career) from the ground up, they’ve learned to make their music the way they want, without any middle man getting in the way. For any fan of electronic music, be it dance, techno, dubstep, beat street, get thee to RBMA Radio now for a peak at the unique sound of Instra:Mental. Believe the hype.

Fashion Gallery Champagne Shopping on a Beer Budget

April 30, 2010 - 12:21 pm

When we pulled onto the freeway in Indio, California, you could almost hear a collective exhale from inside the car.  It had been a long trip.  While the premise sounded idyllic — deserts!  Palm trees!  Swimming pools & music festivals! — the reality had turned out to be a joyless romp through an artificially lush playground for senior citizens.  Harsh, I know, but unfortunately, true.

On our way to Coachella, we had passed signs on the I-10 promising some of the best designer shopping on the West Coast.  I had pawed at the window desperately, but my intrepid editor, ever responsible & on-task, had kept her foot firmly on the throttle.  (Things to do, places to go, enormous lines of traffic to sit in!)  This time, heading in the opposite direction, it wasn’t such a hard sell.  We practically left half our tread at the off-ramp, we were so excited.

After all, what could make the transition from the Californian desert to Los Angeles easier than some much-needed retail therapy at http://www.premiumoutlets.com/outlets/outlet.asp?id=6 With a slew of stores ranging from Barneys to Bottega Veneta, Dior to Dolce & Gabbana, & Ralph Lauren to Rock & Republic, we knew it was going to be a good time.

Music The Archie Bronson Outfit

April 28, 2010 - 6:20 am

Archie Bronson Outfit

I haven’t heard much about The Archie Bronson Outfit lately, and little of their actual music. What more could be said of a group that describes themselves as “trashy guitars and psychedelic, krauty rock”? Or one that writes songs with irreverent titles like ‘Kangaroo Heart’? Besides the obvious — a band that rarely (if ever) takes themselves seriously –  singer Sam Windett’s voice is somewhere between the distorted, trembling vibrato of Johnny Rotten and a ghost or two from ye olde rock n’ roll. Think not so much the aggressive vocalists of our generation as a bit of Joplin or, dare I say, Axl Rose; not so much in tone but shrill distorted yell, right from the gut and the soul. They’ve come a long way since their debut, Fur, and in a way they haven’t — the same sound that endeared the media and press to them back in 2003 hasn’t changed, and they still sound like they record all their music with pillows strapped on top of the speakers. It’s that fuzzy, furry guitar sound that’s garnered them their legion of loyal fans. You can check out some of their music on Red Bull Music Academy right now.

Music The XX: Happy Melancholia

April 26, 2010 - 11:50 pm

The xx: happy to be here

Described as “4 precocious 19-year olds” from the United Kingdom, The XX are, quite simply, 4 Brits who play self-described “pop music with a bit of a twist.” On Red Bull Music Academy, they play their latest and greatest Headphone Highlights — a collection of different music of all genres, from hip hop to electroclash, that’s inspired the four to do what they do best. Outside of this, it’s hard to definitively describe The xx’s sound; songs like ‘Intro’ and “VCR” which are strange and hypnotic in their own sad sort of way could be the soundtrack to a sunny day as much as a gloomy and overcast one. Yes, they’re a bit forlorn, a bit melancholy, perhaps even pseudo-suicidal sounding. But it’s a deft mix of   post-shoegaze and mad prose that makes for something unique and catchy despite its mopyness, and worth checking out on Red Bull Music Academy.

Fashion Sabit NYC: Tanoshinde, Zeal & Passion

April 26, 2010 - 11:48 pm

sabit - lead picture

The word, “Tanoshinde” in Japanese means “Enjoyment” – and it’s a recurring theme when you speak with the owner/designer Shoichi Amemiya of the NYC /Japanese street-style apparel brand, Sabit. He presides over his Manhattan Fashion District showroom like a fashionable, Obi Wan Kenobi, and every Zen-infused word from his mouth shows  his true love and gratitude for the 5-year brand he’s built from the ground up.

“My brand is based on a Japanese fashion style called Amecaji ,” he begins. “Ame- stands for American, and –Caji means casual. It basically means American Casual or American Heritage. For example, there might be a brand that decides to make A2-Flight Jackets based exactly on the ones used by American pilots in World War II. Or another Japanese brand might decide to make denim based on Levi’s 501 jeans styles from 1950. It might not be the same thing but it’s an exact replica – so Sabit takes inspiration from this style of clothing with different spins and twists.”
