Yasmine Kittles and William Stangeland Menchaca of Tearist performed at Carniville on Saturday. The LA-based duo played early in the day to a sparse crowd but that didn’t keep them from pulling out all the stops. It’s obvious that Yasmine is at home on stage, jumping from one side to another, dramatically swooping her head, as if encouraging the wind to have its way with her long, dark locks.

As her voice soared up and down across the Carniville grounds, it was easy not to notice Will bumping behind her on the synth. But the result was impressive. Their music is pretty difficult to place in a genre, but its easily reminiscent of Bat for Lashes and The Knife, making use of eerie ethereal vocals as well as jarring, non traditional instruments and backup. I was lucky enough to photograph the duo in front of a corn dog stand after their show.
