For the tens of thousands of music heads who descend on Austin, TX each March for the SXSW music conference, the accompanying day parties have grown to equal the official night time showcases. And no place is this more true than this year’s Carniville—three days of music and mayhem presented by Mad Decent, Jelly NYC and IHeartComix. With headline acts Major Lazer, The Walkmen and Diplo, plus almost 40 other artists, rides, games…oh, and free booze, this is one fiesta not to be missed. Chinashop will be there and we asked IHeartComix head Franki Chan to get us psyched.
How did the parties throwing this event come together?
Franki Chan: For the last 4 years in Austin IHEARTCOMIX, Jelly and Mad Decent have been teaming up to do huge events during SXSW. This year it seemed natural to continue that tradition. Typically how it works is that I’ll come up with initial concept and then I’ll flesh that out with Jelly to see what is realistic and what isn’t. We’ll approach Mad Decent and they jump on board. After that, it’s very much a team effort to make it a reality. This is our biggest one yet and if it goes off without a hitch, I feel like we’ll be seeing more Carnivilles in the future.
What do you think Carniville offers that you won’t get from other events in Austin this week?
Franki Chan: Rides! It’s a real carnival, not a carnival themed party. We’re actually bringing in real rides, games, carnie food, etc. We’re going out of our way to make sure this is all FUN and pure PARTY. Most Austin events are either just a show or under the guise of a showcase. I think what we do that is so different is that we just throw a really good party with most of the typical show rules thrown out the window. We’re doing a lot this year to make sure people get a full experience, both visually and aesthetically, along with a great line-up!
You’ve been going to SXSW for a few years now. How has it changed from your perspective?
Franki Chan: The biggest change has been that both SXSW and the City of Austin have been cracking down a lot of the unofficial parties. It’s become more rule based, which has taken some of the excitement and unpredictablity out of the experience. Another huge change has been the inclusion of more dance and DJ based acts, making it a more rounded music event.
What’s your favorite thing to do in Austin when not at one of your own parties?
Franki Chan: I love the Tex-Mex and being able to go to other people’s parties!
What acts are you most excited to see at Carniville and why?
Franki Chan: Glass Candy, Major Lazer, The Very Best, Ninjasonik, Juiceboxxx, Yacht, Moonrats cuz they always put on amazing shows. Men, Hudson Mohawke, Cymbals Eat Guitars, Sleigh Bells cuz I haven’t seen them yet. Honestly though, I’m really stoked for everyone. So many of them are my favorite artists at the moment! It’s gonna be a really amazing few days.
