The folks at Atticus Clothing have swallowed up the shelves of 1Louder with their new spring line of apparel, which they celebrated in a big way on Friday night’s official “soft release” party. In order to kick off the first of many events that Atticus has planned in conjunction with 1Louder, Brian Ewing was flown into town from New York and asked to paint the largest mural that he has ever attempted. Who is Brian Ewing? He’s is a freelance illustrator who has applied his creative juices to creating artwork for various bands, publishers, and corporations including: Van’s Warped Tour, Star Wars, Hustler, Budweiser, DC Comics, Guitar World, and Marvel Comics, just to name a few. Aside from a collection of artwork that is deemed increasingly buzz-worthy, Brian is also preparing for the release of his book, Don’t Hold Your Breath.
“4 days, 14 hours, and lots of beer” was Brian Ewing’s official recipe for the entrancing mural that was unveiled upon the back wall of 1Louder on Melrose. Upon being asked to perform such a feat, Brian found himself a bit perplexed as to how this whole operation would go down. After deciding that his original estimation of being able to pull off the job by himself in two days seemed a bit on the aggressive side, Brian enlisted the help of a few of his fans and fellow artists. Over the course of the next four days, every hour of their time was devoted to finishing the mural before the start of the event. They made it happen, finishing up the final brush strokes as the doors opened and the first few admirers wandered in around 7:00pm.
The mural is a replica of the original artwork that Brian did for the band Brand New on a series of tour posters and merchandise. Brian explained that it was the fanbase and esteem of the band that he has to thank for his initial taste of popularity: “Kids have it tattooed on them – it kind of took on a life of its own.” The mural image is a self-portrait that he painted while he was going through a tough relationship and was originally meant for a different band that had requested Brian’s services. After the first band refused to pay him for his efforts, Brian took back his art and decided that it would work perfectly for Brand New.
With fresh paint tattooing his arm, and tape concealing the missing skin on his fingers from scraping the wall while painting, Brian stood and proudly greeted those that stumbled into 1Louder to admire his masterpiece. The mural came out fantastic, if I must say so myself. It flatters the wall of 1Louder and will serve as a backdrop for all future events that the store plans to host, as well as eye-candy to trendy shoppers. In addition to the mural, 1Louder will be displaying other collections of art from the hand of Brian Ewing throughout the next few months. Swing in and take a peek, the mural especially is hard to miss

I have that shirt of the man drowning from a Brand New tour, however, would not go as far as tattoo it on myself!
