Anticon Records | If there’s a musical duo that hints at taking the genre in what is truly a new direction, Themselves might be at the top of the list of contenders. A rapid-fire machine gun attack of lyrics, spliced between defiantly 80s New Wave, and a cacophony of different artillery sounds, Themselves often plays like the hip-hop equivalent of speed metal on their latest, CrownsDown. Then there are times when the group verges closer to Ministry territory, with its fluctuation between samples and distorted noise, before venturing back into the familiar realm of hip-hop. It’s a daring move that will have most aficionados of the genre, and especially those who aren’t, anxiously awaiting the group’s next move.
