In 1991, a group of friends decided that they were tired of not having a place to listen to “their” type of music. “Their”, referring to growing up on old 8-tracks of James Brown, 45’s of Hector Lavoe, and listening to Ray Barretto on a static filled a.m. radio. Los Amigos Invisibles wanted a place where their friends could dance that didn’t involve just salsa or the heavy rocker acts that many of the forgotten discotheques had evolved into. Now, with 2 Grammy nominations + 3 Latin Grammy nominations, 6 studio albums, and 18 years of growth in the music business; a simple plan to conquer Caracas dwindling club scene with “their” music, is on track to become “our” music.
I sat down with Los Amigos just minutes before they were to take the stage opposite Plastilina Mosh, for a unique take on a battle of the bands called, Red Bull Soundclash in Houston, TX.
What do you attribute as a major turning point on the timeline from being a small band playing in a discotheque in Caracas to having a “Single of the Week” (Vivre Para Ti) on ITunes?
Los Amigos Invisibles- In 1996 we went to New York to play some shows and we took with us a few of our first cds. A friend helped us get them into a Tower record shop there. David Byrne of Luka Bop came across one and gave us a call. We became an underground band with a much respected Godfather. To be short.
Sooo, any chance you guys want to go to Vegas with me?
LAI- Very fortunate we were.
You’ve traveled to 60+ countries–which have been your favorite destinations?
LAI- Ohh, that is so hard for us to decide. I think we like Australia, Europe, and America for sure. Some of us live in New York and Miami now. But, always nice to travel back to Venezuela to play for the fans who helped us.
What’s the future hold for Los Amigos Invisibles?
LAI- We really wish to be able to just keep playing music and traveling. To be on stage and to dance is just so much fun for all of us. As long as we don’t have to go back to the jobs we once had, we will be happy.
Los Amigo’s Invisibles went on to shut out their good friends “Plastilina Mosh” that night 4-0. With all of the chanting and flag waving, it made this writer feel like I was in a much larger stadium witnessing not a simple rhythmic battle between friends, but more a World Cup for musical dominance.
