Music Not Quite Themselves
Anticon Records | If there’s a musical duo that hints at taking the genre in what is truly a new direction, Themselves might be at the top of the list of contenders. A rapid-fire machine gun attack of lyrics, spliced between defiantly 80s New Wave, and a cacophony of different artillery sounds, Themselves often plays like the hip-hop equivalent of speed metal on their latest, CrownsDown. Then there are times when the group verges closer to Ministry territory, with its fluctuation between samples and distorted noise, before venturing back into the familiar realm of hip-hop. It’s a daring move that will have most aficionados of the genre, and especially those who aren’t, anxiously awaiting the group’s next move.

Music Stupid3ous Dorks
Can there be too many bands that make you feel like you’re living in New York circa 1984? Does all that retro rap got you a little hungry for something even more retro? Well then check out the Stupid3ous Dorks, who not only look to have literally stepped straight out of a Hanna Barbera cartoon, but are as shameless in the style and decor of urban fashion past as they are their love for old school hip hop and rap. But on Dame Fifty5′s “Hipster’s Anthem,” there’s plenty of that old school flavor mixed with, dare I say, like a Bizarro-Universe Boyz II Men-flavored Motownphilliness. Which works out fine because these guys are pretty effin’ silly. And by “silly” I mean “fantastically awesome”!
Music The Return of Chuck D.
Was never much of a rap or hip-hop guy, though not for lack of trying. But when I saw Radio Raheem blasting Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power” from his boombox before inciting a riot in Do The Right Thing, and witnessed D and co.’s first hip-hop/metal collaboration on “Bring The Noize” with Anthrax, I was game. Beats and samples aside, when listening to Public Enemy, one of the first things you notice is Chuck D’s unshakable confidence. It’s in his abrasive and imposing voice, one which has not only made Public Enemy such an incendiary force in the genre of hip-hop, but helped inspire musicians from all across the musical terrain. Samples from D’s epic career abound on Red Bull Music Academy Site, where you can listen to Chuck comment over both classic and new stuff, and even hear what inspired him.
Fashion Chanel Iman: Supermodel 2.0

Who is Chanel Iman? At 19 years old & with neverending gams, she is one of the most well-known & successful models of the moment. She signed with Ford in 2006, landed her first Vogue cover at 16, & regularly books the most prestigious shows at fashion week. With an African American father & a half-Korean mother, she has her own very distinctive look.
Chanel Iman recently fulfilled one of her all-time modeling goals: to be a Victoria’s Secret Angel. The highly-coveted positions are only offered to top models. Chanel is one of five new Angels, joining Heidi Klum, Adriana Lima, Alessandra Ambrosio, Miranda Kerr, Marisa Miller & Doutzen Kroes. She’ll be joining them in the annual Victoria’s Secret fashion show, which happens in New York City on November 19th & is broadcast globally.
What makes her so charming? It’s a combination of her personality — of which she has plenty — & the fact that she has remained grounded. She is a delightful contradiction in terms. She caught Anna Wintour’s attention when she winked at her during a runway show, but her mother still cuts her hair & keeps her on a budget of $5,000 a month. Her favorite food is chicken & waffles, & despite being constantly surrounded by the best clothing the world has to offer, her favorite places to shop are flea markets & Forever 21.
Music DinoWalrus
Kanine Records | What the hell kind of name is DinoWalrus? Ostensibly some species of lumbering mastodon which exists only grab your attention by stomping around carelessly before breaking into a full-blown stampede. Songs like “BEAD” sure give a glimpse into the mutant minds behind this mess, as well as the band’s penchant for meddlesome dabbling in keyboard tinkery before parlaying it all into an aggro-industrial crush.
