Sunday August 30th saw the closing of a group show at La Luz De Jesus gallery. La Luz is located behind SoapPlant– a well-loved Silverlake store stuffed full of books, home decor goodies and wonderful STUFF ranging from bobble heads and locally-made beauty products to candles and t-shirts. This has to be one the best places in town to buy gifts that people will actually love. Rubber frog purses? Yes please! Now back to the art show.
The exhibit showcased work by Jessica Dalva, Scott Holloway, Misato Otake and Jasmine Worth. These artists have distinctly different styles – Dalva has just graduated from OTIS and makes hyper-detailed marionettes and 3-D assemblages, Holloway draws his inspiration from religious relics and anatomical diagrams, Otake paints tattoo culture-inspired cuties and Worth is known for her small-scale macabre oils. Diversity made this show, actually– it’s perfectly in sync with the mixed collection of works by other artists in the adjacent back room’s on-going exhibit and Wacko’s cornucopia of campy splendor.
