Movie night with that special person in your life can lead to a very romantic evening – one that leaves the entire room a complete mess.  Because, when romance ends up a little messy, isn’t it the best kind?  I mean, if you aren’t cleaning up the clothes scattered everywhere, doing laundry paying special attention to newfound stains visible only under black light, massaging sore muscles, applying a few band-aids in really awkward places, then did you really have a romantic evening at all?

Of course, all of this is possible, as long as you select the right film.  The best part of watching a DVD at home is the ability to take full advantage of the pause button when things get too heated… off screen.  The following films set the mood evoke tears, laughs and all those feelings necessary to get the juices flowing in all the right places.  And the best part of watching a romantic movie on DVD, talking during the film is completely optional. Of course, one would hope your lips would not be doing much talking at the end of the night.  So, if you’re looking to get laid on the “let’s-stay-at-home-and-watch-a-movie-on-DVD-night,” these films will guarantee your best chance.

5. Ghost
Pottery-making was never portrayed more erotically in any film before or since. Patrick Swayze and Demi Moore sizzle in this romantic-action-fantasy that often leave even men in tears or at least a little choked up.  This film proves that really less is more, there’s really no need for an expensive dinner or gifts.  Candlelight, soft music and some clay can be the ingredients for a perfect evening.

4. The Truth About Cats & Dogs
I don’t care what anyone says, Janeane Garofalo in glasses is way hotter than Uma Thurman any day.  I may be in the minority on this one, but glasses are just sexy.  Anyway, this tale of pets and mistaken identity is cute to the core.

3. Serendipity
Fate intervenes in the lives of John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale.  Cusack is simply shopping for a Christmas gift for his fiancé when he meets – the one!  Or is she?  That’s what he wants to find out as he begins a nationwide search.  As Lloyd Dobler in Say Anything, Cusack melted teenage hearts and here he proves that being a hopeless romantic is something women still cannot resist.
John Cusack returns to familiar territory in this overlooked romance.  On the eve of his wedding John attempts to track down a woman he met one night years ago just to see if that spark is still there.  Cusack is a master at appearing manly in spite of being mushy.

2. Before Sunrise / Before Sunset
Richard Linklater has pulled the best performance out of his leads Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy.  For anyone who has ever found that instant connection which turned into an all night conversation and more, these two movies will help you explain it to those who haven’t.  Brilliant, smart, passionate, the Before bi-ology is a romance centered on realism.

1. I am a Sex Addict
One might best describe I am a Sex Addict as a raw, more real, underground version of Woody Allen’s Annie Hall.  But Annie Hall didn’t have full frontal nudity. Or intense discussions about blow jobs. Or frequent visits to prostitutes. And while the laughs are frequent, like in Annie Hall, the ending takes a serious turn that is completely unexpected. I admire actors who expose themselves – full frontal nudity takes guts. And while Caveh only does partial nudity (no sausage shots), the degree with which he exposes himself on screen does not compare to those acting in the buff. The finale, er, climax will leave you moved and in tears.
Caveh’s raw personal film, I am a Sex Addict, may be the best date movie ever made. Any woman who views that film with their significant other will conclude that their man is not nearly as screwed up as that guy in the movie. Thank you Caveh.
