Urban Exploration Montmartre, We Meet Again!

It was my last night in Paris. I spent the four days of my fifth visit to the City of Lights avoiding all things typical, proud of my rebellious attitude, enjoying the bar and coffee shop scene instead of the usual museums and churches. Still, it was the last night, the top of Montmartre is the highest point in town, has one of the most beautiful views I’ve seen, and my friend had never been there. It was time to go out.

Montmartre’s main attraction is Basilique du Sacré-Cœur [Basilica of the Sacred Heart], constructed in 1891 and perched at the very top of the hill. It’s been drawing crowds since its opening. Innumerable cafes, restaurants and souvenier shops surround the cathedral, along with a multitude of sketch artsts – on hand to capture you any way you see fit, be it a dignified portrait or a caricature straight out of your wildest nightmare. You’ll also find scattered locals [people do actually live here] walking their dogs, playing chess and dodging tipsy tourists with expert finesse.

We wandered through the crowds, the clanging of glass and a blend of English, French, German, Russian – all echoing across narrow cobblestone passages and clay rooftops. When you go, be sure to catch the sun setting over the already-glowing Parisian skyline. It’s worth the climb.

Next time you come to Frogland please check in advance if I can help you go where you wished to go the last time. That, and if you like that big creamy gâteau in Montmarte, there’s an even creamier in Lyon: Notre Dame de Fourvière.
