Mayer Hawthorne could easily be called a “throwback” to an earlier time, when the music was about soul and showmanship. Hawthorne is not simply a singer (or a performer). He is a multi-faceted soulful musician, who makes the music he feels. Whether dropping a verse on a Stones Throw label mate’s new track, or sitting in the studio with his band crafting his unique brand of funky modern soul, Mayer is doing Mayer all day long.

A man, a mystery a soul singing white boy from the heart of Motown, I’m sure dude’s heard it all. Hawthorne is a very mellow fellow (until he hits the stage) – well mannered (“how do you do,” as he often says) and well versed in working the crowd. Born in Ann Arbor, Michigan (a stones-throw from Motown), Mayer was influenced early on by the classic soul singers (he favors “Smokey Robinson {as} the total package”, though it was not easy for him to choose (for good reason). Mayer Hawthorne definitely has some stee (style) to his swagger – cardigan clad with a shirt and tie (but don’t call him a “suit.” He’s low-key (not overly cocky), but he definitely knows there is value to his music, something you sense from his confident demeanor. While Hawthorne’s music might have certain nostalgia tied within, he is not some simple retro act trying to ride old sounds ‘til the wheels come off (or checks stop coming in).

Mayer Hawthorne is diverse, not easily cornered; his soul is genuine – his songs are real. While his label Stones Throw might initially sound like a strange fit for a predominantly Hip Hop label, the kid can also spit (rhymes).  He’s a showman and a soul singer – but wholly a musician, one with the musical range to back up his disparate musical interests. He is also planning a new wave record once he’s completed his first full-length Mayer Hawthorne record, which just goes to show how quickly he spread his musical feathers.
